Belgian pilot Paul Frère, born in 1917 has passed away yesterday (23/02/2008). He has won Le Mans in 1960 for Ferrari with O. Gendebien. Great pilot and great man. May he rest in peace. Paul Frère had a very bad car accident in 2006 close to the Nurburgring while testing a Honda civic type R. 8 broken ribs, 2 perforated lungs and a fractured pelvis. He was 90 and he survived.

What an enormous loss...he was a great man, a great driver a great engineer. I talked to him at Le Mans when I went there for Cavallino 93 to 96 and he was very gracious with a kid like me the first year when discussing an article I was preparing on the Maserati tipo 151 he said you are very young to write about history so I sent him copy and the following year he said good job, that meant a lot.... I interviewed him in June from Geneva by phone for an hour for two books I am preparing he was in the south of France we did it in English since both books will be in English and he spoke it fluently. His memory was sharp, he was very perceptive, but he was tired....he was 90, born in le Havre in western France, but Belgian. RIP Monsieur.
These are very sad news ! He was a GREAT man - I was honoured to meet and chat with him couple of times ! He told me some very interesting stories about Enzo ! May he rest in peace ! Here's a picture I have taken in 2004 Image Unavailable, Please Login
Very bad news.Another great one passes from the "golden age" of motor racing! I always enjoyed his writing. TT/SD
RIP I've still got my first issue of Road & Track, from August 1986 (Ferrari Fantasy) where Frère and Phil Hill were touring in and testing all the current models from Maranello.
Some people told me last week at Rétromobile that he was not doing very well..... they were right.... Sad news, I met Monsieur Frére several times, always great to meet this legend, always taking time for fans. Big lost, RIP dear Paul, another part from my favourit 'Ecurie Francorchamps' is gone for always (pictures taken by me at Brussels Rétro festival 2004 where it was an exhibition in his honour.) Paul Freré was invited by Matthias Ficht (Vice-President of Ferrari Club of Germany) and myself (member of The German MASERATI Club) for a combined event 4 years ago high up in the Dolomites in Bassano del Grappa were also Maria Theresa de Fillippis was present. I remember Monsieur Paul driving Matthias`250 GT Lusso with great verve in the pouring rain. The owner was very impressed! R.I.P. Ciao! Walter
A true gentleman with the motoring hearth on the right place. An icon in Belgian Ferrari history. This is sad news. Rest in peace cher Paul. My thoughts are with you. Joren REMANS
very saddend about hearing the death of one of the greatest automobile race car driver. He will be missed by us all.. May he rest in peace. john
This is very sad news, but he was a great man who had a very long and full life with many accomplishments which will be his legacy forever. Very hard to ask life for more than that. Farewell and rest in peace. Jack.
A great loss - such an eloquent writer and amazing driver - he enabled me (and I'm sure many others) to touch the performance most of us will never be able to experience. Fortunately through his writing his memory will never fade! RIP Steve
Very sad news. I enjoyed his writing in Road & Track. He seemed like a class act and a real gentleman. A life well lived. Neil
