I've tried to search the threads and have references about the above topic, but not the topic itself. (I wonder if they are missing from the "Great Crash") Anyway, has anyone had their steering wheel recovered?

If just redyed, what did you do about the white stitching?

    Thanks,

    Joe

Redying will always look, well, redyed. Probably best to have it recovered, but I hear it is expensive. If you are not super critical of originality, you can get a nice "period correct" replacement Momo wheel for $200 or so.

Like the Momo Monte Carlo. It bolts right up (same bolt pattern) and is available in both 350mm and 320mm. Real leather and same manufacturer as factory wheel. (this wheel is almost identical to the Momo wheel used in a 1986 to 1989 328GTS/GTB)

(warning, I have never done business with this online vendor, so don't know if this is legit price or not)

I documented my experience here. The threads go black (but they were almost black when I started :)). At the time I did mine there was no 308 repo. available. Don't know if that has changed.

I asked Jonathan Stein the editor of the Hagerty magazine if he could research refurbishment of leather steering wheels. I contacted him about 6 months ago when they had an article about restoring wood wheels. I'll reach out to him and see if he's made any progress.

Thanks. BTW, that is the nicest GT4 interior I've ever seen. Looks factory fresh in the picture.

How much "grain" did these wheels have originally? The look-a-like from MOMO has a heavy grain pattern. Mine is almost smooth but I don't know if that is just from use or not.

My 77 has some stitching missing and the leather appears to have shrunk, openng up a 10 mm gap between the sides of the leather on the inside of the wheel. There is a small flap about the size of a pea that is missing on the joint at the botom. The top half of the wheel is fine. Is this something that can be repaired? I am trying to keep up the interior, the car has 30 k on the clock.

    ever hopefull,
    chris

I was able to find the "almost" correct wheel to replace my '78 GTS steering wheel. I say almost because it should be a solid spoke Prototipo and all I could find was one with holes in the spokes.

The "hole-y" one should still be available here http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/PEL_search.cgi?command=show_part_page&please_wait=N&make=POR&model=9144&section=INTdsh&page=1&bookmark=0&part_number=MO-PROTOTIPO-S

I made a contact at Salt Gavina in Torino last year but haven't followed up on it yet. At the time they indicated they would be happy to recover a steering wheel. Seeing how they had a perfect, complete GT4 interior there I thought they would do a pretty good job of it. Just been too many other things going on right now. I'll see if I can dig up the info if you want to give it a try, drop me a PM. I also didn't talk to them about price so I have no idea what it would run.

I recall a thread where someone was advertising steering wheel refurbishment in the various Ferrari publications, but their prices were quite high, somewhere north of $500+ for new leather. Which is crazy when new is $200 for an "almost" identical piece from the original maker Momo. Wonder why Momo would not just go ahead and make a couple hundred piece run of the 308 wheel again, obvious market for them.

Mine had a bit of UV damage, lost some color. Re-dyed it and it looks pretty good to me. Unless you're looking for concourse condition, I don't see what this wouldn't be perfectly acceptable. My white sticking was black after 45K miles anyway so that part didn't matter.

Here is the link. I am going to contact them when I return to the States in May about recovering the wheel in my 328.

Thanks for the link. I'll check them out. But $500 is too steep when a new Momo is under $200. I'll ask the local dye shop about the wheel also and see what they say it would cost compared to the Leatherique guys.

Keep the links and ideas coming!

    Try these guys: http://www.tuffwheelrestoration.com

No experience, just passing on the lead.

Tell them the wheel is from a Hemi 'Cuda, and maybe you'll get a discount ...

    Cheers - DM

I wonder why a Porsche Momo wheel would only be $295 and a Ferrari Momo wheel $495? Looks like they do nice work but I'll just stick with my "almost" identical wheel!

I might see if I can contact someone at Momo too about a run of "correct" wheels, but who knows how far that'll go.

I would just buy a new Momo Monte Carlo...the differences between it and the factory Momo 328 wheel are inconsequencial.

The stitching is black in the replacement, that is the major difference along with some different padding.

Did the 328 have the slight thumb extensions like the Monte Carlo?

I forgot about the white stitching. When I was installing a spacer for my 328 wheel, I scratched it slightly when I slipped with the Allen wrench. I bought the last or second to last new wheel from Ferrari UK back in 2002. I don't think Momo ever made any more. The wheel was a literal bargain at only $475 or so, delivered. Came with a new hub and yellow horn button. By the time I separately Ebayed my old wheel, the hub and horn button, that new wheel cost me about $150! :)

I just did and asked about refurbishment or a small run of the "correct" ones.

The only problem is didn't Ferrari change wheels every few years. It seems like I remember the early GT4s and 308's had silver spokes with holes. 77 or 78 they went to solid silver spokes. The 2V injected cars had Nardi didn't they? The QV's are the same style as the Monte Carlo with black spokes aren't they. That's at least three different styles just from Momo and one from Nardi. Of course I could be remembering all this wrong too!?

I'm happy with the one I bought from Pelican but if I can get the original one recovered (for a reasonable price!) I'd like to. Either way not a big deal for me.

Has anyone ever tried AGLA http://www.aglausa.com/ as mentioned earlier in this post that can report on their quality?

I have a Daytona leather wheel that needs to be redone. The leather is worn through in places. I talked to Tom Shaughnessy about it and he said he gave up trying to repair them as the foam disintergrates when the leather is removed. When new foam is used people do not have the molds to clinch the foam tightly when the leather is redone so that the wheels he has sent away come back fat.

They have extensions but they're bigger on the newer Momo. There are palm indentions on the new wheel that aren't on the OEM, as well.
