It is stupid but I am assuming if they have a dress code they are a private school. During my years at a private school our hair was not allowed to be below the collar, nor we were permitted to have any type of facial hair. Disregarding the rules was grounds for detention and if ignored suspension.

There are a lot of public schools these days that follow dress codes.

Well, I guess there are two kinds of people in this world: those who think it's crazy to give a 6-year-old a mohawk, and those who shouldn't be parents.

Although this situation sucks and really isn't justified, there is so much more important news going on in the world. Dont get me wrong, I think freedom of speech and style is OK but....

If the kid doesn't like the dress code at the school, then he should go to a private school. Private School is like FChat. Its not a democracy. When you join, you know you have to follow some rules that are not traditional.

    Of course.

I guess my thing is, is why not give the kid/parent a warning. I guess the way the parent sounded with her quote, they may have given a warning and the parents stuck her nose in the air at them.

I hate some of the BS they give people in private schools. I remember when I was younger I was stuck with the friggin principal for wearing a hat in the bus.

Let the kid have his mohawk, it's not hurting anyone.

If the kid was of Native American decent(Mohawk Indian) this would be turning into a nice law suit. IMO this kind of news is preparing people for more heavy handed authority.

On Monday as I was driving home from work I saw a kid like this walking along the street with a grownup man, most likely his father, and the kid and ol' dad had matching haircuts just like this kid. The first thing that entered my mind was "poor kid, he'll probably end up looking and acting like his loser father". It just floors me to see parents that friggin dumb who use all sorts of excuses to make up for their unwillingness to discipline their kids. I'll bet this kid would also enjoy running around the house with a loaded pistol; maybe he'll off his dumbass mother and do the world a favor.

Apparently this is the third time this family has been warned about the mohawk. Good for the school though, its inappropriate for anyone to have a mohawk. I'm glad to see kids getting raised well :)

School dress code and it seems they were warned several times so of course the kid gets suspended. Thats life.

Having said that...whats with all the judgemental comments on people with mohawks ? Because someone chooses to make that particular fashion statement means they are a 'loser' ?

Why should mohawks not be allowed in GRADE SCHOOL ? Exactly whom are they trying to impress ?

IMO a person should never be discriminated against based on their fashion sense as long as it conforms to standard deceny laws (lets not see your balls hanging out from your shorts).

I kept my hair waist length all through high school and wore death metal t shirts... I also turned out to be the single most successful person in my graduating class. Lets judge people on what they do and say not how they look.

Jerry what you are saying is absolutely true. I could not agree with you any more. The thing is that with private schools where uniformity is standard, then parents can expect this. That is one of the things they are paying for besides small teacher to student ratios. I went to a private school and had to wear uniforms from 4-8 grade. Kids are just growing up too fast these days.

Totally... Im not saying he shouldnt have been suspended if there was a known dress code. Dont do the crime if ya cant do the time.

Im more directing myself to the ignorant and judgmental comments posted by ferraridude615, goferrari28 and some others who are saying that a parent that allows their child to sport a mohawk must be a 'loser'.

I dont have kids but Id let them wear any fashion style they pleased as long as they took their studies seriously and understood that the freedoms we have in this country are a blessing so dont take advantage of them.

This is indeed stupid but the parents are to blame. If they are pro-mohawk-hair why the hell did they enroll their child in an anti-mohawk-hair school (provided it's private) that has a certain dress and grooming code.

When you go to a private school or private club you are expected to comply with a dress code / manners or whatever is set forth. Employers have dress code and some also have hair codes too (I know mine does). If the rules are clear from the beggining and someone doesn't like them, he or she should go somewhere else without complaining.

You can argue all day about how the world should be, sunshine, but at the end of the day you have to come back to earth and live in the real world, and in the real world, people DO discriminate based on your choice of style. Now, if you think this is so important that you want to bear the consequences of fighting it by direct action, just go ahead and put on a frilly pink dress and go hang out in a biker bar.

No? Whyever not? Because you know you won't like the consequences? Well, this woman not only knew, and had been warned of the consequences, she didn't have enough sense to leave a freaking SIX-YEAR-OLD out of it. You want to wear a frilly pink dress, go right ahead. Put your SIX-YEAR-OLD SON in a frilly pink dress, and IMO you should be hauled up on child abuse charges.

A SIX-YEAR-OLD is too young to know better. His freaking MOTHER bloody well SHOULD know better. This ain't fairyland, sunshine, and the sooner you learn that the real world is not fair, and that you are only going to hurt yourself by flouting the norms of the society you live in, the better. Wear whatever you want, but don't cry when you get fired or beaten up. You know better.

    Lets look at this...

    - According to the article there is nothing in the schools handbook that says the kid cant wear a mohawk. It says he must be properly groomed and not be a distraction. Well those two things are VERY subjective. From what I can tell the kids hair wasnt spiked...it was simply shaved on the sides...not *really* a mohawk.

    - Having said that, the parents were warned several times and it IS a private school so at the end of the day they should have simply abided by the schools decision. If it were public school I can see making a stink..but not private.

    - Since it is a private school the odds are the parents arent ignorant po' folk that are just being belligerent because they can. They obviously feel strongly their constitutional rights are being violated. I personally would disagree and just cut my kids hair. At the end of the day the kid is the one that suffers and THATS where I do not side with the parents. They are wrong for putting the child through this...plain and simple.

However certain comments on this thread, such as "Good for the school though, its inappropriate for anyone to have a mohawk." and " The first thing that entered my mind was "poor kid, he'll probably end up looking and acting like his loser father" are elitist and ignorant.

Where in the Constitution does it say it is 'inappropriate for anyone to have a mohawk'?

How do we know that his father is a 'loser' ?

Im 38 yrs old and still have hair to my ass , have full sleeve tattoos and wear death metal t shirts...yet my net worth is in the top 5% and Ive been awarded several entrepreneur awards and been featured in numerous magazines... its ignorant to judge someone by how they look.

As for your stance that we should all conform to societies limited view of what is presentable... I find that sad. Will it make it more difficult if you dont fit in ? Sure...but it also builds character and IMO gives that person an inner strength that conformists dont have. Certainly did for me and many other non-conformist millionaires Im friends with.

You have enough money when you dont give a **** how you look.

People have the right to express their style from the way they dress. How do you respond to the kids who wear pants halfway down there ass? Let people do as the please. If you dont like it then dont do it. I am in a gray area cause I do think this is somewhat of a special case. If it was a public school I would say it complete BS. Since its a private school, i ay they knew what they were getting into.

My kid will be able to wear what they want...as a parent I will give my suggestions and what I think is right, but ultimately its his/her choice. Im not going to let my daughter wear a skirt that shows her ass, but if she wants to dye her hair blue, go for it. lol I know I will raise them to express there freedom and do what makes them happy.

You miss the point. You are an adult, you can do as you like and know the consequences. The woman is a loser because she is putting her 6-year-old in the middle of a fight he's not old enough to undertand. If he wants a mohawk when he's grown, fine. To put him in a mohawk at 6 is borderline child abuse.

I didn't say everyone sdhould confor. I said that people who don't conform face consequences, fair or not. You managed ion spite of your looks, fine. How many people can have the job you do? Not many. So telling everyone to sport a look that guarantees almost no employer will hire them is kinda irresponsible, dontcha think?

I like my hair long, but it would be bad for business, so I cut it. I make my choice and live with the consequences. So do you. A six-year old shouldn't be put in that position. Would you really feel the same if she'd sent him to school in a frilly pink dress? I hope you'd find that inappropriate conduct by the mother.

I dont know if you noticed or not but we arent really disagreeing. From my first post I agreed the parents were in the wrong. I also never pointed you out as someone that posted something ignorant/elitist. I see your point and agree regarding the parents...so we can stop arguing now ;)

The only place we dont agree has little to do with the original topic. Its in conforming to societies limited view of whats acceptable. If Ive learned one thing its that profit/performance will always outweigh everything else. If you can make me more profit than the rest of the applicants I dont care what you look like or if your favorite passtime is jerking it to beastiality videos...and I believe most business owners feel the same.

In the past I certainly had my share of 'suits' frown upon my look upon first meeting me..imagine my first meeting with the head buyer for Walmart..lol...but at the end of the day they knew I was going to make them more cash than the 'other guy'.

So if you are excellant at your chosen field that gives you huge leverage to look how you want. Those who have to conform simply dont have the ammunition of excellance behind them.

Well if you're going to start being all reasonable :D

Yeah, you finished at the top of your class and that gives you advantages. But your look still made it harder for you. You chose to expend your energy on that battle, fine. Me, I choose other battles.

And yeah, I've walked into a business meeting in shorts and a t-shirt just because I could. A pretty good way of saying "yeah, I'm the man, and you can suck it."
