IMO You can easily spend $1000 less and still get essentially the same laptop which can do the same things, except it doesn't have an Apple on it and weighs 3 or 4 more pounds.

Mac software is unbeatable! I know that you can walk into any electronic store and walk out with a $600.00 laptop but Microsoft is awful. After two years my Macbook has never crashed!

My wife never has a problem with her MacBook. We've had it for around a year now. On the flip side, my HP has sucked since the day I got it. I'm really tired of MS. The one good thing about my HP.... it was free via work. Can't beat that.

A friend of mine got one two weeks ago, it's thin & very trick but I think there are better computers out there for what the Air sells for.

I had to get my iPhone replaced today and played with one for a little while, it is a lot thinner than I thought and extremely light, but when it comes down to it I would rather get a Macbook Pro.

I kind of want one , just for taking it to class, way lighter. I've never been a Mac fan, or used a Mac for a long time, so it might be confusing.

Hate to answer my own question. We have PCs at home with usual expected problems. Just added Apples (16) that run our office software ( Windows based). No crashes now, graphics better, and we easily sync to our Iphones . For traveling and sitting by the pool , I think the Air looks awesome. I do agree though, $2k seems a little high, but at least I do not have to add Nortn or McAfee...

As long as you're not running Adobe products, you'll be somewhat okay - until your required update fries a logic board, or you get a virus...

Would you care to elaborate? I run Photoshop CS2 on my MacBook Pro without any issues.

Would you care to elaborate? I bought the ticket & took the ride... seduced by the sleek casings on Apple products. $3,000 MacBook Pro - installed Creative Suite 2; the thing crashed abut 3 times a day. Recieved a random update (I thought that was a PC thing), rebooted & fried the logic board. Google "fried logic board" & see how many people got the shaft like I did. My PC? It's 4 years old, never crashed once... I switched back to PC:)

Thinkpads (used to be IBM, now Lenovo) are the only way to go, IMHO. Been through three T Series, and they've been solid as rocks. Had one hard drive failure with the second... a new drive was overnighted to me by IBM free of charge and the problem was solved the next day. And that's not something I'd necessarily blame IBM for. Want to upgrade to a new Lenovo after a friend bought his and has had zero problems for the last year and half. I was skeptical of the Chinese Lenovo takeover, but it seems they're just as good as the old IBM branded products.

I just thought of another downside I found on the Air, the trackpad button is very small. I did not like how the trackpad was setup, the button is very narrow and the then the actual trackpad is very large, I guess you would get used to it, but I did not like it at all.

were you playing with the multitouch? thats why its like that. I dont care what you guys say, I really like the package apple puts together, from style to software to performance. In two years with my macbook pro I am still extremely happy. I have an ipod and an iphone. Both are great and the integration is flawless. Apples are something I will happily pay top dollar for.

The Apple Versus Windows debate is very much like a Ferrari versus Corvette question. Small quality manufacturer versus mass producer's top end offerering
Undoubtedly the Corvette can do most, and probably more than a Ferrari in some instances and obviously costs way less, but at the end the day, the Ferrari guy will buy a Ferrari and the Corvette guy will buy his Corvette regardless of the pros and cons in each case.
Macs are not just beautiful, there are many instances where they are clearly superior to Windows based computers, but I will not waste any time trying to quantify that. Those who know, know, Those who don't, move on.
The Air is a terrific package and it certainly is lighter and easier to carry around. Apple have recognized that there really is no need for a permanently installed disk drive when it is used (other than watching movies) for an infinitesimal amount of time relative to the usage of the computer itself. A stand alone plug in drive works just fine to load software and data and can then be put away, and that alone reduces the bulk of the machine considerably. It won't be long before this obvious space saving step is copied by everyone else. So if you worship at the altar of the Dark Beast, MS, you too will have your lightweight laptop soon.

410, nicely put. My computer knowledge is lacking but after reading your post, with the car analogies, I finally understand and agree with you . I am going to the Apple store tomorrow and buying one. I will update later.

apple did away with the floppy drive when the iMac first came out then pcs followed. The same is happening again lenovo sells laptops without a cd drive. I have two laptops and almost never use the drives. I think the air is a great idea I just want the solid state harddrive version to get cheaper. Heck I am typing this from my iPod touch :)

410SA, I can see your point of view on the design issue, and I suspect that is the case for many Apples fanatics. That is why I tried out Mac ownership for a while - the sleek industrial design; looks pretty on a desk.

However, I can justify paying more for a car that is shiny & rare, but not for a hammer... and a computer is just another tool to me.

Don't even talk performance. The only thing the MacBook Pro did faster was load iTunes. Photoshop was equal to my home PC. Sorrry...

as a user of both pc and mac it is nice to have a mac to surf the web as there are far fewer viruses that affect mac. Also they rarely ever give you the error messages pcs do. Along with the fact the opporating system is very straight forward. I love the expose feature as well as the dashboard. I however agree there are pros and cons to both, but with boot camp or paralells you can now run windows natively on the mac.
