So, my kids and I signed up for a Tae Kwon Do class (Chun Do Kwon style). Had our first lesson, which was fun, but difficult IMO. It sort of reminds me of trying to learn how to dance for my wedding... (i.e., I'm a klutz). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows of any good books or videos that they could recommend that maybe show step by steps of the various moves. I'd like to try to practice on my own in between classes.

    Thanks,
    Dom

My advise is to just stick with your local dojang. Tae Kwon Do is all about patterns or steps. The higher the belt the more complicated the patterns are/is. Classes are a great physical workout along with good mental discipline too.

Regular attendance at class (2-3 times per week) should be all the instruction you require. Both my kids have been involved with our local black belt club for the past couple years with very positive results.

Yeah, I know what you are saying, but the fact is, I'm a klutz. Uncoordinated. What I'd like to do is to be able to practice the moves at home in between classes. Only thing is, I'm not confident that I will do them correctly on my own. That's why I'd like to have a book or video with step by steps for the various patterns.

Also, reading up on some of the history, why they do certain things, etc., would be nice.

    Thanks,
    Dom

I have a floor standing heavy bag and a couple different kinds of gloves. Work your legs at home but don't forget to stretch!

i started taekwando lessons when i was 7. i became an instructor when i was 18. well, it's always easier to teach adults, because they learn faster, and it's easier for them to understand. kids wise, most of the tie they're playful, and not serious. so, i thnk ur gonna have an upper hand here.

tips? well, practice is the word. u gotta learn and practice how to execute proper front kicks, turning kicks, side kicks, etc. as for the steps, every step is more less the same. as u progress thru the stage, it's not gonna be complicated or harder. it's whether u remember the basics. if u do, it should be a stroll in the park.

there's also something called the taekwando 'pattern' or tae-geuk, as it's called in korean. my advice is get a book, or a video, and use those as guidance when u self practice.

Repetition is the best way to learn. Just do the moves over and over thru the years, if you hang in there, and you will get better. I had a very old guy who came to class and stayed. In the beginning I thought it was a waste of time but he got better and faster and stronger. The improvement was spectacular. If he could do it anyone can. It just takes persistence and trying to improve and you will.
My other advice is to not do too much at first. Just set a course you can live with. In other words don't go 6 times a week. Go 3 and do it every week no matter what. You can work in stretching while watching TV but don't push too hard at first. You will get better there too in time.
I was involved with Tae Kwon Do for 9 years and the biggest mistake was to quit. I didn't realize the benefits until it was too late. I still work out with weights and aerobics but it's not the same.

I don't know sh$$t about martial arts, but a good friend of mine is fairly adept in/at Judo.....

He got in a bar fight the other night, and threw some Judo moves out..........rocked the house if you know what I mean.

According to him, all the other martial arts are ballet....don't take it out on me, I can give you his e-mail....=)
