    Scott,

    Welcome.

Dick Merritt could potentially put together a list of all 288 GTOs that have entered this country. However that would be a very laborious task considering that they have entered the country at all points in time from 1985 onwards to the present, and he would have to appoint a government official to dedicate themselves to this task... you can see what the likelihood is of this ever happening.

Youll find that Dick Fritz on the East Coast and Larry Englehardt on the West Coast are not exactly chassis number collectors and thus do not have a "list" of cars they handled. They both think theyve Federalized about 25 cars each at the most over the years. Based on this information, and my own research Id say about 60 GTOs have entered the USA over time, but perhaps 25 - 30 remain... you mention "US GTOs" and Im sure youre aware that this simply refers to Federalized cars, as there was no US GTO as far as the factory was concerend.

Several people have collected chassis numbers over the years, and they have simply made notes to fine-tune their own private register as they come across confirmed information. This is my own case.

A full list of all the cars has been published once or twice before and Ive seen it done by FML or Ferrarissima years ago.

If you need help verifying any particular car Id be only too happy to help.

This would be difficult. Not impossible though. I'd be curious to know if somebody could put together a list.

Between 1984 and 86', 272 GTO's were built by Ferrari with their serial numbers from 52465 though 58345.

    That's all Ive got.

    :)

Referring to which chassis numbers came into the USA - Its actually no problem at all compiling a list if the person comissioning the list would be prepared to PAY for the time of the time of the individual who would have to go through vast expanses of Department Of Transportation records to determine which chassis came in to the country :)

You would also have to hope that the cars were recorded properly as "288 GTO" or similar and not "1985 Ferrari" as was sometimes the case - although given a chassis number I could probably tell you if that was a genuine GTO. Then dont forget the few cars that were smuggled in - yes, smuggled: there are some GTOs known in the USA right now that the DOT has no record of at all as Merritt will confirm.

BTW, in my view lists can only be 99% accurate at best, because unless you were there at the moment it hapenned, you dont really know, and are relying on documentation which as we know can often be wrong.

    Thanks for the quick response!

I'm not sure somebody could get a hold of all that information. Are the serial numbers of privately owned automobiles available to the public?

Yes, if the car is the public domain. But there are well-known instances of those that do not want their car's chassis numbers shared or posted anywhere.

    Joe and J,

Thank you for the very quick response to my question. It sounds like developing a reliable list would be a nearly impossible task!

I have tried finding an answer by searching FChat, but can't find one. It seems like you do a pretty good job of keeping track of the 288s. There was a GTO that Marshall Goldman had this month. They procured it from a collector in Ohio and it was sold to a fella in Chicago. I was going to go to Marshall Goldman to see it but it purchased immediatley. So that very next weekend when I went to Continental Autosports for another matter an there is was in the service bay. It looked like they were removing the firewall from behind the seats. Anyway, do you know who sold it and who bought it? Just curious.
