I went to change my brake pads today (1994 512TR) and found all four rotors right at the minimal (nominal) thickness after 38,000 miles. Is there a better/cheaper alternative rotor than the Ferrari units, or are these rotors identical to any other vehicle? How long can I expect to use these rotors with the new Porterfield 4R-S pads? Also, the front brake pad wear sensors do not fit on the Porterfield pads. Any options besides just taking them off? Thanks.

    Jim,

I get all of my brake rotors from these folks...and they supply the OE identical Brembo units. They also supply Hawk pads.

Thanks, David. These Brembo units are ventilated, but not cross-drilled like the originals. Will I notice a decrease in performance?

    Jim,
I'd call Brembo direct here in the States...and see exactly how they're supplied. Perhaps the picture shown is generic? I've never been a big fan of cross-drilled rotors, as it seems that's where the heat cracks start. I'd get their thoughts...

If they do not supply them cross-drilled, this is an easy task for a local machine shop...if you decide to go this route.

    Regards,
    David

IMHO, crossdrilling does not improve performance of brake rotors. If anything, it causes the rotors to act like a cheese grater and cause the pads to wear faster. And if the holes become plugged with brake dust, you will get a lot of pulsing under hard braking. Plus, if you track the car, crossdrilled rotors are more prone to cracking than solid or slotted rotors.

I have been over, around, up and down this issue with my Corvette, which I use as a track car. Bottom line, I use solid, non-drilled, non-slotted rotors on the car. They last longer, provide excellent braking performance, and resist problems with cracking and pad wear.

So, the answer is, no, you will not see any difference in braking performance if you use regular stock Brembo rotors on your car. The only thing you'll be missing is the "bling" factor of how crossdrilled rotors look when the car is parked.

Agreed especially since no one drives their Ferraris in the rain @#$%! But if you do especially in track events, the slots are very effective in mitigating water and gas build up when the rotors are hot.
