From time to time the moderators see fit to ban participants for some or other abuse of the forum rules. It would be interesting and informative if there was a permanent schedule, thread or list of banned users and a description of what they said or did to be banned. I believe that if people could see this the overall behavior on the site would improve. We live in a part of the world where open disclosure of peer punishment is the norm. Fchat should be no different. Then of course, courtesy of the Bush/Cheney regime, there is always waterboarding for errant members.
Alex. Haven't you seen this thread started less than a week ago in OOT ? http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=188483
I hadn't. Interesting. Kinda like an FChat AA meeting. "my name is Sack o' Sheiss and I insult people randomly" What I had in mind was people currently banned.
How about a page with little cartoon stocks like the Puritans used? Mods could overlay the avitars of banned users on them as a form of public ridicule. If you really want to know, all you have to do is look up their last few posts. I'll bet that 90% are trolls that hit and run or commercial abuses. Not the juicy stuff. But I guess the mods have a better handle on that.
What he is asking for is a feature the Moderators can see... Maybe one of them will do a 'screen print" of the current list..... I'd agree it's mostly made up of commercial spammers, together with some questionable personalities... ..and recently, we've had some that were BOTH!
There is a list in the moderator forum in a thread about temp and permently banned folks. There's also a list on the Moderator control panel that shows how much time is left on the ban. At any given time there are about a dozen or less temp banned members here, with bans ranging right now from one day to TWO years. There are quite a few more in temp hell right now than normal. Must have been a busy weekend for you guys. Most of the perma bans (probably 95+ percent) are spammers. It's only the occasional regular that gets whacked permanently. A list of currently banned members would serve what purpose exactly? Peer pressure to get them to behave? If a ban from a moderator, and a strong private rebuke doesn't affect them, what makes you think getting put on a list here would? And for some I think the challenge of getting on the list would make them work even harder for a ban. I dunno, but I think this idea needs some more noodling. DM
I think that's a little vindictive and the abuse of the list would be too easy. It's not like a ban from Fchat a felony or a sexual offense!
Maybe we can get a google map and show where most people are from that got banned by flahsing red dots over the city??? Just kidding, Kai
Most of the time a ban is warranted, but there are certain people who can do just about anything, and others that you can abuse the rules about and you suffer no punishment. Generally not a bad idea. Remember the spoof about Hitler that someone posted? Accurately describes the attitude of those who've been banned. Art
I think a list is a great idea. I'll carry it a step further, I'd like to have a place (Special Super Secret Subscribed Only) where I can see the errant post (naughty bits?) or SPAM or bad language or whatever caused the problem in the first place. This would be a permanent archive of most of the stuff that is typically deleted when someone goes to the "cooler". Information is a good thing and I'd like some more please.
There is plenty of discussion on such matters in the Silver Subscribed section. Here's a few recent threads: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=174316 http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=177603 http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=185197 Not forgetting of course the Return of the F chat Police thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=98761 Unfortunately many such threads often degenerate into opportunities for backstabbing past (banned) members behind their backs.
Mods, I think a list would be beneficial in some respect as i know from seeing another forum that when i saw it list of banned users, it all made sense and it confirmed what i thought about the users. The stats seem to prove that as time goes on, these people tend to ease off slightly and think before they press enter on their keyboard. I suppose the pro's and con's need to be weighed up but thats my pro for you Matthew
Question: If you are banned does that mean you can not visit the site and read the threads or are you banned from posting ?
As long as you don't log in you can browse, but if you log in you get a banned message and can't access the site. I'm assuming it works the same here as it does on EF, where I've been banned three or four times. Dave
Well gee whiz, now that you mention it........................ Actually, I ban several Kwajaleinians daily.....
Isn't a teeter totter just waterboarding without the water? Make make FChat torture fun for participant and deliverer.
