Do you think it's necessary to get a PPI if I decide to purchase a car through a reputable dealer? Clearly the dealer will want to sell me the car so he has somewhat of a conflict of interest, so should I have the car inspected by someone else?

Thanks. I am a little slow this early in the morning. Since there is only one Ferrari dealer in most areas of the country, who should I turn to for the PPI? Is SGS Automotive that eBay recommends reputable enough? Thanks.

Yeah, take it to another shop, be honest about your intentions and if your current dealer has a problem with it, walk away.

100% take the car to outside source that works on and knows Ferrari...Some of the smaller shops the techs may be more open to showing diffrent issues, and they will also want to make you a life long customer so they will more then forth coming about what they find...Now to add to that, a PPI is not the end all, make sure the shop you choose goes over everything..I have heard stories where the car passed the PPI the customer picks the car up and a couple of days later somthing breaks and a major repair is in need...

I know from the many PM i get how many here have bought from big name dealers without a PPI, only to have major issues, and they recive zero help from the selling dealer....

Get a PPI done at an independent service facility. It will be the best $500 you have ever spent.

Is it that common for Ferrari engines to have problems? That must imply that Ferraris are junk cars, in which case don't buy any of them!!!

Not at all...Ferrari have very robust drive trains and if properly maintained will give you years and 100,000 mile+ of use. However, parts and labor are expensive and if not properly maintained they can be a bank busting nightmare...FYI, I would recommend a PPI on any used car you buy if it has no factory warranty coverage remaining ...

I wouldn’t necessarily shy away from the selling dealer for a PPI,,,, IF they have been doing the service on the car, and IF you intend to continue that relationship.
When I bought mine, the dealer had been doing the service on the car for the past 12 years, and I made it clear that I would continue that service relationship.
My thought in having them do the PPI was that they known the car and would give an accurate assessment, because saying that all was okay with the car, only to find out down the road that it wasn’t would have made them look foolish and dishonest, and lost them the service on the car.
In the end, it worked out just fine.

    What about new cars?

That way you'd know 100% if the engine was assembled correctly!

A PPI isn't just about an engine, it's for the whole car. Would you be pleased if the car you just bought needed a new suspension? How about a new set of tires? If saving that hour at the shop is worth several grand to you, then so be it.

Absolutely - Unless they give you a written long term warranty. Dealers make mistakes too

I would get a carfax and a PPI. I did carfax's on a few of the cars on ebay and I just about fell over with the issues.

I'd check Carfax, but I agree with JTR. I was over at Bobileff's today and a fellow (local) FChat'er was checking out a 308 that Gary had just completed a major service on. Maybe it's because I know him, and he restores seven-figure exotics for a living, but I wouldn't bother with a PPI if I were buying a car from him.

Obviously, it depends on your relationship with the dealer.

eBay is something of a garbage pit for problem cars. I agree, if you must buy a Ferrari off eBay, I'd want an in-person inspection, PPI and Carfax check.

To an extent the answer depends on your relationship with the dealer.

I spoke with the mechanic I've used for four years at Algar about a car they wanted to sell to me. He assured me that it had no serious issues.

So I bought my 360 from Algar without a PPI, but with a warranty and an assurance that they would fix anything that cropped up in the first 60 days, along with a couple small issues they were aware of prior to the sale.

Well, I took the car in at 45 days. They fixed all the issues, including a balky 2nd gear. While they had it, they fixed a curb rashed wheel and replaced all of the brakes at no charge to me. Not getting a PPI didn't put me at risk, but I have a very strong relationship with a dealer that I trust, who again proved the trust wasn't misplaced.

I am friends with the salesman and the dealership's general manager. I actually felt very comfortable with the CS that they found for me -- included the 1 year powertrain warranty. I didn't feel a PPI was necessary, and I do not regret that decision. This level of comfort in a dealership's personel has been very unusual in my experience,

Carfax can be a useful tool. Just use it in the proper manner. A 'clean' carfax report just means that there are no 'documented' issues. Could still be issues.

I only use carfax as a method of disproving a car has a good history, not proving it.
