I just ordered a Canon HG10 and I'm not really sure what to expect in terms of usability of HD. How do you convert an HD video for youtube or for that matter how do you make an HD video play on a standard DVD player? Thankfully I have a PS3 which I know can play AVCHD in their solid state (or atleast so I read) but know that there are going to be situations where I will want to play it on a regular dvd player.

Whatever video editing software you use will be able to easily convert it to a format you can then burn onto DVD. If you've got a Mac with relatively recent versions of iMovie and iDVD (not to mention Final Cut and DVD Studio Pro), it's about as easy as breathing. I can't speak to Windows software, but I can't imagine it would be very complicated at all.

It should come with some pretty extensive. I have a JVC HD camcorder and it came with a bunch of movie editing and DVD tools. The easiest to use is Powerproducer which takes in the video files from the camera (it's not a standard file type) and allows you to make a dvd with menus and everything.

I just tracked it and I'm getting it today, so I should have a better idea. www.broadwayphoto.com $583 for it. It was kinda a scam though, It came out to like $650 cause they dont charge you for shipping but they charge you 8% for shipping insurance. Either way it seems to be one of the best deals around. The only thing that I know that I'm not really fond of is the overall feel of the model. The Sony HDR-CX7 would have been really nice but it wasnt worth $200 more plus having to pick up $150 worth of memory sticks and it doesnt even take as good video as the HG10.

Just to let you guys know, the firewire port on cannon cameras does not work well with Final Cut Pro. Usally video captured by them have dropped frames or is corrupted. So if you have a different way of capturing would be nice. Just my .02 cents!

I myself is thinking about getting a camera. Most likely a Panasonic P2 camera.

Please, please, please go to resellerratings.com before buying a camcorder. A lot of these places that have prices that are too good to be true are selling you "Knock-off" versions, aka versions that didn't pass quality control.

That's not true - if they don't pass QC they don't leave the factory.

Many of those resellers are selling "gray market" parts which means it was not meant to be sold in the USA so you don't (usually) get the USA warranty.

Nope, they sell them to places where they know where margins will be a lot smaller. They know they won't have to cover warranty, so this is one (of many) reasons for a grey market. SOME of them are identical to the ones we can get here, but the chances of this are small.

It comes down to one of many things:
    Cheaper Components
    Same Camera, No Warranty
Same Camera, No Accessories, No Warranty
Same Camera, No Accessories, No Warranty, PITA dealers (Broadwayphoto, etc)
