so i'm very seriously contemplating getting one or the either. right now, i can get both of them for around the same price, give or take maybe 20 or 30, so i figure the ps3 is the way to go, granted that i'll have the gaming platform if i want it, even though i definitely won't use that as much as the player itself. what is everyone's thoughts on this? i kind of want to wait off, simply because i'm a firm believer that within a few months prices on bluray players definintely will drop, and technology will get better. i know this topic has been beaten to death over the past few weeks, but i'm curious as to what everyone's thougths are.

I went ahead and just got the ps3. Not that I play the games really, but I like to play some F1 once in a blue moon.

Get the PS3 (it can play DivX files so you can use your PS3 as a movie jukebox as you can either attach a external harddrive to it or just a USB memory pen, that's what I do) and GET THE BLUETOOTH REMOTE! It absolutely rocks. I also surf the web through it when laying in bed and not getting sleep, it works when you're laptop is at service...

Connect it to the net and download trailers in High Def. and demo's for new games before buying.

I have Motorstorm, Colin McRae, (Sony) F1 Championship ed. and Sega Rally... Very much fun when you just have some time to kill...

Remember that PS3 will upgrade its Bluray functions over the years (Bluray was never completed and rushed in to the market to fight Toshiba players) and the standalones perhaps won't have the same possibilities...

I don't understand why anyone would even consider a standalone Bluray-play when you get EVERYTHING in a box. Surf, download, use it as a jukebox, play the best car games on the planet...

Good luck, you won't regret it. Just make sure you also invest in a quality TV otherwise the Bluray potential won't show at all, trust me. The games work great on all crappy 720p LCD and Plasma's though, BUT as always there is much to extract with a 1500 $+ TV.

thanks, definitely some solid points in there. i've got a 25 inch lcd in my room, plus a 42 inch lcd in our family room, so it'll probably spend time switching back and forth

I know the 60/80GB version can... Please recheck if the cheaper 40GB can also, I'm not 100% sure. Could be a difference between Eurospec (what I have) and US-spec models so please check with a local store or something. Otherwise it does have a regular broadband input for wired net :)

From what I understand the 40GB PS3's will not play PS2 games. For me that's a huge disappointment due to my collection of various driving games. The larger HD units will have that compatibility but they are not currently available in the US yet. Plus it won't be until another year until GT5 comes out, hopefully we might expect another price drop or some type of incentive due too slow sales.

    Incorrect!

the only difference in the two PS3 systems offered in the states is HD size and if it is WiFi enabled out of the box or if you need to add a wireless adapter.

I play GT3 on my PS3 all the time it works just fine

I do run a seperate player for movies though (LG BH-100 for bluray and hddvd) I just like having a standard IR interface that i can integrate into my HT touch screen as opposed to the bluetooth controller protocol from sony

Actually, he is Correct!, the 40GB does not play PS2 games, you must have a 20,60, or 80 GB PS3.

Also thanks Insearchofdrivingnirvana and Scott(RollsorFerrari). I was kind of having the same dilemma, I wanted to get a PS3, probably wont be watching many Blu-Rays. I can't wait for a "free" PS3. "Free" -meaning bunch of Amazon gift cards from surveys and various other things.

Agreed on all points here. I had to make this same decision last year and opted for the PS3. It was definitely the correct choice.

I've been calling around trying to find the 80gb unit & they are all sold out. I'm not wanting to resort to EBAY or Craigslist, you never know what you are getting from those people. A box of bricks maybe? I'm not far from Gamestop's corporate office, I have a friend from my Quakecon days that works out there & I'll see if one can be located.

Research it, it's on the Sony US site. Also check the Wikipedia article. Better yet, here's the chart.

Instead of the 80gb, you might consider picking up a refurb 60 gig from Gamestop ($429) and upgrading the HD (easy and user friendly process). For ~$70 you can buy a 120gb hd, and you'll have more memory than any version on the market, plus the hardware-based backwards compatibility (plays 100% of the ps1 and ps2 games) and wireless. Heck, for $200 more, you could upgrade to a 320gb PS3.

I'm picking up a PS3 in the coming weeks in preparation for the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, and I have concluded this (60 upgraded to 120gb) is the way to go.

that table has definitely helped out a lot, thanks for posting it up. i'm basically ready to do it, the only thing stopping me is wanting to wait for 1 of 2 things to happen:
    1) the price drops on the ps3, which i've got a feeling will happen once the holiday season gets closer, but i really don't want to wait that long.
    or,
    2) the wii comes out with a blu-ray player built in, i'm interested in this simply because i think i'd enjoy playing the wii more so than the ps3, more interaction with the games.

The 80gig model was out for a bit (with Motorstorm) - that's what I picked up, and it works great. Got the remote for playing Blu-Ray movies, love it. I've read that the 80 gig is coming out, bundled with a different game (in Europe they're getting the 80gig with GT5 Prologue)... Anyway... the PS3 is the way to go: you get gaming and Blu-Ray, and when they decide to launch Blu-Ray spec 2.0 (ethernet connectivity) you'll be able to get it with a firmware update. Buy a standalone player, and no firmware updated is going to make it sprout and ethernet port...

It was $25 at my Best Buy.

I had a coupon for $20, which I got for being a loyal customer and Reward Zone member.

So I got the remote for 5 bucks. :)

I went to a GAMESTOP after lunch & what luck, they just got one shipped in. Snagged a PS3 80 gig unit with Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle pack, I still can't believe these things are still so hard to find. All I need to do now is decide what LCD HDTV to get.

Get a Sony TV. A little bit more expensive than the competition but more reliable in true Sony spirit and good quality feel.

That's what I've been looking at but most of them are more expensive with 120hz refresh rate, from what I've been told this is a must have option on HDTV's if you plan on using any type of Blue Ray player. This will be a standard in all HDTV's within a couple of years. With the way the economy is I really thought Sony would drop it''s prices over the July holiday.

Make sure you check out Amazon! I just bought a new 46" Samsung LCD, latest model, and saved $600 off BB and CC prices. If you want a Sony LCD with the 120Hz, also consider Samsung. Both will get the job done and both look great.

I just got my LN46A750 and it's awesome. I love it. Great black levels for an LCD. And it was only $1800. If 46" is too small, they also make a 52".
