The difference in paint colors has multiple reasons:

    - the pigment in the paint is not always the same
    - different primer colors
    - paint thickness
    - more than one paint supplier/brand
    - painted by different painters
    - etc.

Ooo, he had lots of Ferraris! He recently sold his Le Mans raced California Spyder....I met him in 1999 on the photoshoot of his PERFECT Daytona Coupe and my ex-Shah of Iran Miura SV for Road & Track magazine. At the shoot he told me the story of a strange man who approached him unsolicited in 1989 asking him to meet him at a bank in Long Beach with the title of his 288 GTO. He did, and the man forked over $1 million US...

The Daytona was not perfect. Lots of little nits on that car. That said, it did glow in the dark.....

Believe it or not, I still have that magazine.
It was the first issue of C&D delivered to my house (back in 1984 it was very difficult to subscribe directly to C&D from Jakarta but I finally managed to get it anyway)

Most significant of the 288GTO are its mirrors if you ask me. Is there a story to tell about them? They strike me as "too big", just design or a necessity?

I agree, but I was wondering if it was "just" design or was their shape was dictated by DOT regulations.

Nothing to do with DOT regulations - purely design.

I'm sure that DOT regulations had nothing to do with it, since the 288 was never officially intended for import to the US anyway.

I have wondered about them, though. They don't seem "too big" so much as "too tall." (Don't get me wrong, though; I generally like
    the 288 GTO.

I've heard of 308 owners who seek out these mirrors for their cars, but I won't be doing that. In fact - as heretical as it might sound -
I think that I'd put color-coded 308 or 328 mirrors on my GTO if I had one.

It was said at the time they were that high to be able to look over the wide rear fenders, owners here can tell if they are any good. Also the right mirror is more to the rear compared to left, to be able to look past the window post.
I once saw a picture of a 308 with GTO mirrors, it looked totally wrong.
