The plastic base on my mirror has broken. What kind of glue will bond it back together? So far I've tried model cement, and Goo off automotive contact cement. That stuff didn't bind it at all. Will Crazy glue work?

Probably not Crazy Glue. 5 minute epoxy will probably work well.

+1 I've used this for other things that have broken on other cars and it works great.

If all else fails, the Californian mirrors are still available although now with antiglare glass. You can harvest the base easily.

i dont know the car you have but some bases are mad from PP (polypropelyne ) and there is no glue that will work the 2 little covers are made from ABS so you can glue them the only way is to PP weld them you can get a kit in a good auto store or get new ones from som old mirror

Thanks, I'll try the epoxy, and if that doesn't work I'll go back to the manufacturer and see if I can just purchase the base.

    Again, thanks.

Remember, Bob, the Vitaloni Californian mirrors manufactured today have a "reverse footprint" to the base. Look for NOS mirrors which have the correct base.

Those mirrors have the correct bases but the mirrors are updated and differ from the period mirrors. If it matters, the bases can be used or the old mirror can be installed within the new assembly.

Bob don't do anything yet till you hear what I did,yes plastic is hard to bond to any kind of glue I've tried them all till I founded this in ace hardware, its made by "lock tight" its for plastic and its a two part, one part is a primer, you do that on one side and the contact glue on the other and in sec's it done, the same thing happen to me on the base of the mirror is a plastic cover to hide the screws and I broke it and didn't know what to do,this stuff is great

How different are the mirrors. I'm attempting to restore my car to as close to original condition as possible. Is it something that most will pick up on, or just a concorse judge with a very keen eye?

I think you need the "flag mirrors". They're called baby tornado. Also by vitaloni.

I should have mentioned before that I have the square mirrors. I use to have the teardrops but they were not big enough to suit me. I don't care about the show thing or trophys for best in show. I'm more interested in driving the car and would rather have the bigger mirrors for those pesty drivers that like to ride in the blind spot that the teardrops don't show. I know about angling them outward competition style. I usually have them that way.

    Bob,

Those mirrors are the same ones I have on my car. They are hard to find but I might have an extra base. I've bought several used sets to make one good set. Last year I drove about 60 miles to a show. After parking I noticed something didn't look right with the passenger mirror. I touched it and it fell off in my hands! The base had broken and the only thing holding it on was the lip on the base gasket!!

I'll go out and see if I have any extra bases left. I also found out that some are made of aluminum and some of plastic! Go figure, they must have changed at some point!!

    Bob,

I looked and it seems with six mirrors in my garage I only have one spare base left. I'd send it to you but at the rate they seem to break I'm reluctant to let go of my only good spare part left!

I'll look and see if any of the old links I saved while looking for them are still good. They are the Pronto model by the way.

    John (and all),

All this talk of parts breaking and items getting more scarce makes me wonder what future owners (FO's) are going to do to content with NLA parts. Say, in the year 2080 maybe there will be a clone chamber invented that will duplicate (atom by atom) any material object in it for a 100 year old 308!! Well, I won't be around to see it anyway (not my problem man).

I'd be happy to make a mold & turn some out of polyurethane composite if I can borrow a base in good condition.
The moldmaking process won't hurt the base. Will return a new one along with the borrowed one.

BTW, I haven't taken one of these mirrors apart, is there just one base pattern for both sides?

Once again Verell comes to the rescue! The base is the same for either side you just turn it around and the mounting screw goes in the other direction. I'll send you my last spare this week.

    THANKS!!
Believe you have my address, if not, send eMAIL.

    BTW,
Any chance you have some front (trapezoidal) & rear (small rounded) mirror end caps in really good condition? If so, could I also borrow them? I need to make new molds. Need to borrow at least a pair of each, but 4 of each would be ideal.

    Verell,

I don't have any of the other caps. What Bob and I are talking about on our mirrors is the whole base. The pic he posted is actually the broken section that always seems to pop off. I'd be willing to bet that it is on the end with the mounting screw. Seems to be a flaw in the design as all of mine that are broken are in nearly the same spot. I do have your address and I'll try to get the base shipped out by Tuesday at the latest. Mondays are sometimes hard to get out or work on time!

    Thanks again,
    John

These are the same as used on the (my) Alfa Romeo Alfasud 1980-1984 allthough that won't help people in the US much and over here they are getting rare also.

Knew we were talking about the whole base, but since you mentioned you'd picked up some spare mirror parts though I'd ask about the caps.

Thanks for the loan, It'll be a couple of weeks before I can make the mold as I'm running with a substantial backlog right now, lots of people trying to get their cars ready for driving season, (including me ;) ).

Are people likely to want to buy just one of these, or a pair so they'll have a spare?
