Ok, so assuming I am a guy that really enjoys driving with the top down... and I DON'T track my car...

what would be the drawbacks to a spider instead of a coupe? Why should I get a coupe instead of a spider?

I want opinions from you guys as to why a coupe is better... so I can THINK about it. Because if there aren't any good reasons, then I think I would get a spider.

As high as $50,000 for a new 430 Spider.

But nothing replaces the feeling of a beautiful day with the top down. IMHO anyway....

Fairly weak argument, but theft. You can slice through a convert top pretty easily. Also, in my own case where I live, you can't drive with the top down except for maybe 3 or 4 months out of the year. Why have something you can fully use?

If you really want a spider, what possible "good reason" could there be to get a coupe?

By the way, I'm a total coupe guy and would never have a spider. There's just no way I think you should get anything but the spider you really want. Go for it dude!

Here are all the negatives, no need to post the positive as you already know what that is.

Spider = higher service cost, for example the top assembly needs to come out to repair anything fuel tank related, or to remove the engine/tranny assembly. RR the softtop assembly is a 10 hour job in itself.

Spider = plastic rear window, easily scratched and cracked. To replace the plastic window is a major job in itself.

Spider = Very complex soft top operating mechanism, many potential components that can leave you stuck with the top open of half way closed.

Spider = Less structure strength. I can feel the frame shake in my spider, but not the coupe

Spider = Heavier weight, I think by 90kg or something like that.

Spider = slower 0-60, 1/4 miles and top speed thank the coupe

Assuming this is a 360 based question??

I have owned both and the cars are very, very different. The top was a constant source of concern and headache. It's incredibly complicated and was prone to getting stuck in the middle. I constantly was planning trips so that I wouldn't have to operate it unless absolutely necessary. I frankly sold the car mostly because the top made me so nervous.

The coupe I now own is (knock on wood) much less worrisome. Plus I think the price spread is about $20K right now so that's nice too.

All that said, having the top down was very sweet! And the car looks great when opened up.

It really depends on the person. I personally like the coupe because it has better curves and it looks better.

Other people might like the coupe, and others might prefer the spider.. that's why Ferrari is selling both! :)

The only car that I would like to have the top open while driving is the LP640. Soooooooooooo.... sexy! :p

    Best,
    Erik G.

    Coupe's are for men.

    Spider's are for women.

I have not so far grown a "Va-jay-jay"....bless your little cottons...

I cannot imagine NOT having a vert in a place like Cali or Phoenix where so much of the year is top down weather.

The car performs like a SOB...even in Spider form so if you ARE a top down guy DON'T settle for anything less

My wife likes the spider better than the coupe, she thinks the spider is better looking (with top down of course).

I like the coupe better than the spider, I thnk the coupe is better looking.

Actually I am not ashmed to say, I clean the house, do the laundry, wash the dishes, mop the floors, yard work and cook. This is what happens when you marry a beauty queen with a MBA degree.

lot of responses pretty quickly... pretty funny stuff.

hey, spiders may be for girls but at least you don't drive a mini-convertible like I do right now. Its possibly the least-masculine car on the planet. Great to drive but really painful on the ego. A 360 spider would be 5000X more masculine, so I can't really lose with that trade up.

Anyway, yeah, these were the kind of posts I hoped for to make me THINK.. especially about the top mechanism, etc... worth thinking about.
