246s are a bit longer than 206s. Right? Where is the increased dimensions evident? In the front quarters, doors or rear quarters? I must say, I have never been able to notice a difference from casual observation. In fact the only external difference I'm aware of is the 6 vs 7 slots over the engine. The differences must be subtle because usually when you lengthen a car you lose the fluid lines (think XKE 2+2 and Datsun 260Z 2+2). Does anyone know exactly WHY it was lengthened? Was the 2.4 engine wider, er, "longer"?
Rogliatti's book, The Ferrari (1973), lists wheelbase and track for the two cars as follows. Unfortunately, it does not list overall dimensions. 206GT Wheelbase: 2280 mm. Front track: 1425 mm. Rear track: 1400 mm. 246GT/GTS Wheelbase: 2340 mm. Front track: 1425 mm. Rear track: 1430 mm. Wheelbase difference of 60 mm. = 2.36 inches Rear track difference of 30 mm. = 1.18 inches 2+2 adaptations require alot of additional length (8-12" or more) for legroom, as well as a flattening out of the roofline for rear seat headroom.
If you look at the DISK I sent you with your CAR, there's an article in there that highlights all the differences between the 206 and 246, including a CHART that shows each dimension, weight, etc.: But to save you time click H E R E page three of the article has a chart. dave
Thanks Dave. I have the disk, but unfortunately, I have never been able to get it to open on my computers, prob because they are all clunkers!
I've looked at a couple of 206s and 246s side by side and the rear quarter on the 206 looks a bit shorter. I'm not sure if that is in fact the case or if the different exhaust tips somehow create that illusion but that was what my eyes told me. I know the difference is small and subtle but it's strangely noticeable. ...Keith
