I am contemplating having a follicular unit micrografting procedure done to take care of my male pattern baldness. Has anyone out there had this procedure done, and how happy are you with the results? I took Propecia (finasteride) for 5 years religiously and had great success with the Propecia, as I re-grew most of my hair, but the cost of Propecia keeps going up and up. I quit taking Propecia about 10 months ago just to see what would happen, and as expected all the hair that I had re-grown promptly fell out. That's what I don't like about Propecia- you have to keep taking it in order for it to work, and the price keeps going up, so the drug company kind of has you by the balls (or is that by the hair?) From what I hear follicular unit micrografting is a permanent procedure and would cost about the same as taking Propecia every day for about 5 years. (Around the $5,000 dollar mark.) So does anyone have first hand experience with follicular unit micrografting?

Oh yes, and I tried the shaved head look and was not at all pleased, so I'm not going that route.

Why didn't you get generic Proscar and break it 4 ways? Pennies per day.

    5mg finasteride.

Used to shrink prostates. If you break them more or less in quarters it would yield ~1mg doses for maybe 10 cents per day.

Persription only; women should not handle broken tablets.

    I have it.

I went full boat too. I started out with scalp reductions starting about 1991 when I was 23. I ended up with about 5 sessions of transplants finally ending in 97. I have been on Propecia since 1998

I have never for one single second EVER regretted doing it. It was the best investment in myself I have ever made.

Go for it and don't look back.

On-going studies are being done to see if it will PREVENT prostate cancer.

Would have to be used daily starting early on, i.e., maybe as young as 30.

Theoretically, it shoud but who knows.

Not such a bad side effect, ehh?

The Propecia dose for hair is 1 mg, for the prostate it's 5 mg. I have always wondered if it was too low a dose for us (formally) bald guys to protect our prostate gland too.

    It doesn't drop testosterone.

It blocks the conversion of regular testosterone (the stuff you like) to 5-di-hydro-terstosterone which causes some things you don't want, like baldness and a big prostate.

AFAIK, possible side effects to propecia

-Loss of libido (i.e. no interest in sex)
    -Impotence
    -Diminished quantity of ejaculate
    -Gynecomastia (man boobs)

Side effects are rare and most guys don't experience any of them. Some do get some of them though. If I recall correctly around 5% experience side effects.

Exactly. It isn't testosterone that causes baldness. It's a gene (or genes) that some lucky people like me have that code for your body to attach two hydrogen atoms onto testosterone. The propecia helps to block the conversion of regular T to DHT. If you have DHT circulating, you are going to thin up top. Sorry.

There is one small side effect, all I am going to say is Peter North doesn't take Propecia, if you know what I mean...

    Not even close to 5%.

It is unfortunate that the rare side effects are written up for helpful drugs and people have a hard time doing a risk to benefit analysis.

Many time really good drugs are rejected by patients because of unlikely side effects.

When people say "well can't that drug cause problems?" I always say "sure, and if that worries you , don't take it". The patient's illogical choices aren't my problem.

I checked into it and you are right! My doc said it was around 5% but upon looking into it, each possible complication above was in the 1.0 to 1.4% affliction rate. And of course, many of the men affected likely experienced more than one side effect, so adding the %'s together isn't really the correct way to arrive at a total.

I think the possible side effects are pretty tame. You'll know pretty quickly if you have libido problems or impotence. As for reduced fluid - does it really matter? As for man boobs - that one does suck but its very very rare.

Propecia is 1mg of Finasteride. Proscar is 5mg of Finasteride. I'm no doctor but I'll bet the possible complications are exactly the same. It's the same medication, just in a slightly higher dosage - or just about the same dose if you cut it.

The side effects seem very rare though.... and they generally seem to go away once you stop taking the drug. It takes propecia a good 6 months before you see any effect so if you're thinking of it, best to get started ASAP.

You need to start some therapy ASAP

I spoke to dermatologists that told me that they can help but cant do miracles and that you need to get there ASAP for them to help

If you cant afford the surgery at least get some over the counter Biotin at GNC or get a prescription for Propecia, Proscar, or Avadart

The porn guys take tons of stuff so they are not your average Joes, they take enough wood producing meds to stock a lumber yard

some of those guys take 200mg of Viagra or more, thats 4 pills !!!!!

Ive heard some guys have this stuff they inject into the base, downside is that later they cant get wood without it, and its probably not that great for your health anyways. I'm thinking it could be cancerous
