The sale of the car discussed very early on in this thread (that you make reference to in another thread) was indeed quite a "story". Sorry you got bored and were left hanging without a conclusionary report. However, the story of the ex-Bob Pond car does have a happy ending:

Lets remember that GTOs are 5 times as rare as F40s so they dont change hands as frequently so there is less of an established market pattern. Prising one away often involves a goodly degree of 'horse-trading' and Im actually surprised as many have sold in the past 6 months as have.

The sale of the Pond car (which was breifly bid up on EBay to just over $700k) with just 1,000 miles on the clock was ongoing by the elderly owner who was suffering declining health to complicate matters. As bidding closed, the owner passed away, and his son took charge of negotiations. He increased the ask price to $725k and a well-known LA dealer who can confirm this purchased it immediately at that price for his East Coast client. Thats the reality of the sale of that car. It took a little while, and apologies for not filing a final report, but the car is being enjoyed and was recently shown at a major Concours D'Elegance to much acclaim.

The reality of some other sales is as follows:

Tom H recently sold his car for $650k.

Todd S recently sold his car for $650k.

Marshall Goldman recently sold their car for $640k.

All of these cars have between 15,000 and 37,000 miles on the clock. This gives us a feel for the values of the cars from ultra-low mileage to drivers. There have been two more sales that I am not at liberty to 'kiss-and-tell' about, save to say that they fall nicely in the same pattern noted above. Also, I have noted some outrageous asking prices that exceed the above, but asking numbers are just that. One can ask the moon, but the transaction number is all that matters.

Hope this is helpful in shedding light on GTO values today...

Many thanks. That is most useful information. I am grateful for your post. Friends ask me what the market is for 288 GTO's and I always feel rather embarassed to answer that I have no idea

Dont be embarrassed. It is a very rare car and there have been years where so few have sold the market is "whatever it takes to prise one loose".

Also, an owner who has no idea of values is often a true example of one who is keeping the car long term ;-)

Looks lonely around all those Porsche's. And, they would, if only they could, become a Ferrari GTO.

I recently had the opportunity to see (and video) a 288 getting serviced... transmission was out and being worked on. I'll try and get the video up for you all to see.

    Quite the sight!

I know of another that sold last week for 650 in Atlanta. Very nice looking when I saw it apart while on the lift for service at FOA.

I should have done that when we rebuilt the engine (after the EPA & CARB tests) and had the transaxle apart just to check it out. (It was fine.) We sent the bell housing back to the factory for the update when all this was going on a few years back. The cost for the update, like $90 USD. The price to ship and insure the bell housing was a bit more....

They can do the bellhousing here in the USA nowadays for some $900. Inflation?

Steve does your GTO have the single-piece Schedoni luggage unit? It seems to me that is a rare appointment for the car as I have only ever seen one other car it was made for...

    Joe,

I couldn't tell you at this point. I have four or five of the GTO luggage stack in my warehouse (along with F40 luggage). I can't remember what they are. You could get two pieces of luggage. The larger one that fits above the spare that you normally see and the small briefcase. It's the small briefcase that is really rare.

    Joe,

Well, neither makes the car run any better, so who cares? I'll dig up the part number (yup, there is one) for the small briefcase. One of these, by the way, sold on eBay about two years ago. The first time I ever saw one advertised for sale in public.
