I was always wondering, can you get an equipment violation out of state. Examples would be:

    No Front Plate Tickets

    Tinted Windows Tickets

Can an officer say in NY write this type of ticket to a NJ registered car or vice versa? Has always puzzled me.

    Thanking you in advance

Interesting. It wouldn't make sense for people in states that don't have plate laws (such as FL) to be ticketed for such things, but then again, you do have to observe the laws in each state...

I'm sure they would ticket you either way.

Nope. Only traffic/DUI-type infractions. Local non-federal regulations for vehicles (tint, plates, emissions, etc) are only enforceable in the state a car is registered.

I was at a car meet last year and I had MA plates in NJ, a cop came by and wrote front plate tickets and expired inspection for everyone with NJ plates, but left me alone.

Simba is correct. I currently have no front plate, tinted windows, and expired inspection, and I have no trouble while living in PA since its registered in Jersey.

You can be ticketed for such things but that doesn't mean it has merit. I.E. if it happens and the cop ignores your explanation simply contest it and the truth shall set you free :D

One thing you can be ticketed for even if you have out of state plates is Clean Air Act violations, i.e., illegal modifications to your emissions systems (like no CATS). Also, anything that would make the vehicle not road-worthy can be cited, and in some instances the car can be impounded. Example: Driving on non-DOT rated tires (like track-only racing slicks) or straight-through exhaust. Stuff like tinted glass or no front plate should not get ticketed if you are out of state.

unless the laws have changed if you have an out of state plate in MA and an expired inspection sticker they can't write you a ticket. if they do it will not hold up in court.

I did have a buddy with a lapsed license from NJ get thrown in the clink in Kentucky where driving with a suspended license is a jailable offense.

I didn't think police officers could check for suspensions while you're out of state..

With computers they can check everything, and yes a cop can issue you for no front plate etc, but he would have to know that the state your car is registered in requires them etc. As long as the law calls for it then you can expect tickets!!!!
