    This might be a repost, but how about increasing the amount of time available to edit a post? I participate in a photography forum that looks like it operates on the same (or very similar) platform, and the ability to edit one's post never expires. I'm not necessarily asking for that, but what about, say 24 hours?

    no offense, but who has time for all of that? i have enough of that stuff it work i have to know, and we do not have internet access at work due to security. by that i mean i am on my time at home when i am on here, not goofing off at work on the clock like some lucky users.

    buttons or icons would be better.

    It would be nice to post attachments to PM's also being able to use the 'Edit 'function for a longer period of time after posting would be great (24Hrs?).

    Implement the 'new posts' indicator that Something Awful utilizes. I wish every forum used this.

    It remembers which threads you've read, which post was the furtherest you scrolled and the next time you visit all the threads you already looked at have an icon that tell you how many new posts there are and if you click on it it takes you straight to the last post that you read. See the below pixelated jpeg to get a better idea.

    not to give any ideas, but bad idea to be able to post and then edit it, 60 minutes seems like more than enough compromise. if you made an error, usually you will realize quickly.

    Increase the kb, not the pixels. I keep having to degrade pix that are 800x800 because they're too big kb wise

    the icons in far left column tell you which ones you've read, which are new, and which ones you have replied. nothing more though.

    hmm, 300k enough? When I shrink pics down from 5-7 mega they usually come out about 150-220k at 800.

    Have the server autosize pictures like Ebay does - most digital cameras
    we use produce MUCH larger images by default. It's a pain to resize.
    Ebay just does it for you.

    And also fix FerrariAds. Ads need to go away after, say, three months. Plus, sellers should be required to be a VIN and $$ in the ads.

    For every new thread, the forum software should scan for keywords and auto perform a search. If a match is found, challenge the original poster with something to the effect of... DID YOU SEE THIS THREAD FROM YESTERDAY? YES, IT ALSO DISCUSSES THE WOODEN F50!!!! DO YOU REALLY NEED TO LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT? Continue with posting (N for no, or Y for no)?

    The software should insert the appropriate subject and time, but I think you get the idea.

    How about a seperate forum for "replica" discussion?

    I know that, I just wish forums would use the SA method instead ;) It also puts an end to having to guess which page you were on before, or going to the end of the thread and cycling backwards to find the first post you don't remember reading.

    Non-repeating line colors are a huge factor for gifs in particular, but, for the most part, a jpg image's weight all depends on the dots per inch [dpi]

    For instance, this year's 2008 Pulitzer Prize Winner for Breaking News Photography measures 800 x 405, but is 300 dpi. As a result, it weighs an astounding 380.64 KB.
    http://www.pulitzer.org/year/2008/breaking-news-photography/works/largelatifphoto.jpg

    I kept it at 800 x 405, but knocked it down to 200 dpi and posted it in P&R. It weighs 144.84 KB. [235.8 KB difference, folks.]

    I shudder to think how much a png would weigh...

    I'll add my vote for a reduced wait time for repeat searches. This is my number-one gripe with this site. As someone suggested, how about 15 sec for paying members, 30 sec for nonpaying?

    Now for something completely different... As we all know, what happens on Fchat stays on Fchat. This indeed increases the value of Fchat as a "forever" searchable archive. However, there is a downside. I believe people are intentionally not posting questions/info about their cars if it is in any way negative, for fear of impacting their future resale value. Thus a lot of valuable help and discussion is being avoided/missed. So my suggestion is a subforum where the threads intentionally expire after some reasonably short period of inactivity. This would give people a chance to discuss whatever they feel they need to without future consequences. Of course, there are probably tons of unintended consequences with this idea that I haven't thought of, but it might be worth a trial period. It could be limited to paid subscribers to help keep the content as intended...

    Just a thought.

    You re-saved it with a higher Jpeg compression factor, dpi is just an attribute in the jpeg header, if you call a 800x405 picture 1 dpi or 1000 dpi, it is still a 800x405 picture with the same amound of pixels.
    People who have trouble with filesize to big while the image is under 800x800 can resave it with higher compression, in Photoshop factor 7 instead of 10 reduces filesize while the image quality is not really affected.

    I'm not going to read every post, so this will count as sort of a vote if it was posted before:

    1. have a pulldown select menu that can either classify the title or put in standard words or have such imbedded into the search text [hidden doesn't matter] much like web pages have. The title should be almost a summary of the message, but is usually no where near it. Such would make searches more, meaningful. it is terrible to sift through 100 titles posts each with perhaps hundreds of posts. perhaps having a google interface might be better. NOT sure of the mechanics but having to read lots of junk between the meaty items allows for just not bothering at all.

    2. a way to rate a series of posts to relevance, or means to rate them on the search response.

    3. More stickies that form a logic tree: 348 --> engine --> tuning --> ....
    --> electrical --> .....
    --> [more]
    this would be more like the eurospare type of pull downs, which I find VERY helpful for finding what I need right away. Nonsense posts can be voted on and gleaned from the posts on a regular basis via a bot. I know wiki uses this. Of course there will be abuses, but this involves people afterall and therefore original sin prevails.

    4. more meaninful surveys. perhaps at the end of all this, a survey can be made for advancement.

    5. ability to enlarge posted pics, without downloading and enlarging on our own.

    Rob,
    Provide new (and old) users a sticky tutorial on how to process and post good looking digital pictures. 800 x 800 x 293kb is just fine if done properly. Omgjon and I have been posting sharp technical pictures for years now and they really stand out. I have over a thousand in my storage and Jon just opened a new web site with a 5 way organized set of about 1500 FChat pictures recording the reconstruction of his Dino. http://www.dinorestoration.com/
    It is a shame that so many FChat pictures are neither edited, sized, sharpened and posted to do them justice. Better not to get into handling the reduction of pictures like Ebay. Talk about slowing things down and getting garbage output! The poster has to do it himself. You just display it. Everyone wins.

    Search would be better if you could group words with quotes or something. Also be nice to jump to the actural posts, not just to the thread. All in all, wonderful site design and management.
    John
