External HD no longer being recognised

A few days ago i was having problems with my computer and ended up reverting it back a week or so a few times. It seems that in the process of doing that something happened and now my computer doesn't recognise my external hard drive. When i plug it in a little bubble pops up saying that the USB device is not recognised. This is really annoying me since i need it because all my music and photos are on there and i need to get to both of these things daily


Does anyone know how i could fix this?

Is your computer connected to a mainframe system or network?

here is what happened to me. My computer defaults all external (usb) drives as the "F:" drive. On our network the shared drive is the F: drive. so everytime I tried to access the usb, it failed and would not recognize it. Our IT guys remapped the usb port on my laptop to be the G: drive and all is fine now.

Nope, it worked perfectly before. Not connected to anything else and all the drive letters are unique

Try rebooting with the USB device disconnected. Then reconnect. That usually fixes the problem.

If you have more than one USB port on your PC try switching the hard drive to another.

Fixed it. I plugged it into a power strip with less plugs plugged in. I guess the power strip was drawing too much power
