Criticism please!

Hey, these are some photos a friend of mine took who just recently picked up photography. I was just hoping I could get some honest opinions from everyone. Thanks for your help.

The 2nd one is pretty cool and looks like it took some skills. The rest are sort of just average...but good pics none the less.

On another note, boy murci cabrios are ugly, just my opinion.

 

Yea they sure as hell are. Not AS bad with the top down, but honestly, what Lambo has ever looked good with it's top on?

 

1st one is too grainy.

 

I like the head on shot of the Murci. Subtle difference is color from the front to sides looks neat. B&W shots show the lines well.

The owner should be very proud if he was actually able to install that contraption Lamborghini laughingly calls a top; without suffering any injuries...

Pic 1 has to much going on in the back ground to work in B&W. Try using a larger arpature (smaller f-stop number) to narrow the depth of focus and blur up the background

The pic of the 430 race car has to much reflection from the overhead lights.

I suggest to your friend to take a shot then look at it in the viewer on his camera and look at everything else in the photo, back ground, fore ground, funky reflections etc. Then try to adjust exposure settings, lighting, angle of the shot etc to help the eye be brought to the subject of the photo.

Best advice I can give id to take lots of shots and really look at the bad ones and figure out what went wrong and how to make it better next time.

Taking black & white pictures and saying it's art is a little cliched, don't you think?

Hey, For a beginner they were pretty good!

 

I understand what you are saying, but there is a fundamental problem in what you are saying. You see no one on this thread has called the black & white pictures "art", only you So Fella, stop being so.....so...."Cliche"

 

Another relatively minor thing i noticed is that the background (and some of the foreground) has too much noise. Have them turn down the ISO if they can. Other than that they look pretty good. O and possibly a narrower focal length lense so you only get in focus exactly what you want and non of the background stuff.

 

Photographing cars is very, very difficult. You have to have the right equipment, studio, lighting, background etc. A degree in photography deosn’t hurt either.

For example. Lets Consider Picture one.

1. Why black and white? The color of the car is very impactful. Moreover, in black and white you don’t get any tonal range.

2. No appreciation for the “rule of thirds”

3. There’s a severe lack of Composition.

4. Lighting is terrible.

5. Photographer left reflections on brake light not to mention the "interceding reflection" over the logo on the back.

6. Other little things like turning the rearview mirror so that its refelction was black or at least a different color than the car.

7. Should have been shot form a higher angle for too many reasons to list.

8. I could go on and on, but you get picture. (pun intended)

Now that the digital age is here, anyone with a digital camera thinks he/she can be a professional. Just shoot a thousand pictures and pick your favorites. Unfortunately, it is much more complicated than hoping to get lucky. And regrettably, it’s an art that is soon going to be lost because of everyone “picking up photography”. The true artisans are getting diluted.


I recommend a 4 year degree at a school like R.I.T. (NY)

 

Just had a thought, i do hope the pictures was not taken by the posters 8 year old son. I have visions of a little boy in tears as he reads the responces

 

That could be a good thing. If he really is interested in photography, he could get the proper education and training. Summer jobs with a professional master photographer that has professional credentials and look into a 4 year degree once its time for college. The problem is, iis becoming impossible to make any money in this profession becuase of everyone "picking up photography".

There are some good composition ideas here - not perfect, but intriguing.

I think b&w can be great for cars, although he picked a lot of very simple designs (Murci, Gallardo) that don't have enough interesting curves for b&w.

You piqued my interest though. For those of us who can't go back to school for four years, is there some kind of online course where we can learn composition, post pics and get a professional critique? I'd be interested in becoming a better automotive photographer.

Whenever I take a good photo of my car, it's usually just luck.

That "enzo the cat" did bring up important issues...the most important of which is hearing/reading critical analysis of your work. Be prepared for a lot of that, especially from those already in the photography field who take it seriously. I personally don't like people dabbling in my field unless they're serious about the craft. In conclusion...your pictures are fine for a beginner(they're far from great). Invest in more lenses...for the rim picture an entirely different approach or lense would of been better. It's obvious you have a DSLR type camera, so learning adobe photoshop(doesn't matter which) would be good as well. Good luck...
