Having owned my 2007 F430 for only six months, my experience with the car is pretty limited. What are others encountering in oil consumption? Someone told me that a quart every 1,500 to 2,000 miles is to be expected. However, that seems high to me (and reminiscent of my old 308 GTSi).

    Any thoughts?

My 2005 which I have owned since new has never needed any oil. Changes were at 6 months, 12 months, 24 months so far. Car has 10K on it. There has been a lot of discussion about whether the cars should be broken in according to the manual or not. I would wager that cars that use oil were driven hard out of the box.

I am just turning 1000 miles on my car and it is showing the level at 3/4ths down between the dots. I presume that I wait until it is at the dot before adding a quart. Is this correct?

I had also noticed the same on my F430 and I discussed it in the above thread.

    Tarek:

Shukran! That's what I was looking for. It appears that F430s do burn oil at a rate of – I'm estimating here – a liter every 1,500±. There is always a light oil film on the exhaust pipe tips and often on the paint surrounding them, both on my car and most others I've inspected. Naturally, if you're changing oil every 1,000 miles or so, as some owners do, you won't notice the consumption rate.

He's probably talking about owners who drive the car 1000 mi/yr and have annual service performed.

I just broke 1000 miles today and I bought the car in Dec. and it was not driven for two months. How can anyone only put 1K on in a year?

I found this comment interesting from the other thread mentioned above> " I agree, pure ester base stocks are the way to go. Much better flow rates especially on startup".
Starting the engine is when the greatest wear happens. Are engines consuming more oil indicating they have suffered more wear or is it only a function of driving style? Also in some cases due to mass production all motors may not be built to an identical spec but rather within a certain tolerance range. Different kinds of metal expand and contract at a different rate due to heat buildup adding further to a tolerance variable. Do tighter engine tolerances (ie. piston ring to cylinder wall clearance) on certain engines in a production run contribute to less oil consumption for a specific motor that has been carefully broken in?

The guy I bought my 360M from last year only did 400 miles in 3 years. What a waste. It's no longer going to be a garage queen!

On my 2005, I experienced no oil loss in 18 months and 2500 miles of driving. I was only checking after a 30 minute drive and per the owners manual instructions.
