    Last year I called AOL to cancel an account. Switched to roadrunner. It took about 30 min to get the agent to acept the fact I wanted to cancel the account. They finally agreed and told me my balance was zero. A month later I canceled the mastercard that was being used for the account because the fees were too high. Today I get a call from a collection agency demanding a credit card number to pay off a $44.00 balance. I got no notification by phone through the mail or with email about the past due amount. The collection agency had my name address and phnoe number so you would think AOL would have it too. Tried to talk to a human being at AOL. Impossible they would let me IM the agent who told me my account was past due and I had to deal with the collection agency. The 44 bucks is nothing what gets me is the fact they turned me over to collections without trying to contact me about the account first.

    I canceled my account with them over 10 years ago, I still wonder to this day why people even stay with them with all the frustrations.

    The fact AOL is still around is a testimony to all that is wrong.

    It's been about that long for me also. It also took me over 1 hour to get them to cancel me, they kept disconnecting me when they were "transfering" me to a agent to cancel the account. They did this 4 times. When their guy asked why I wanted to cancel I told him just to pick any reason he had already heard today as they were all applicable.

    Same problem here trying to shake off AOL after canceling. I had to report them to the BBB and the State Attorney General's office to have it resolved.

    AOL's days are numbered. Using AOL for the internet is like using a rotary phone.

    Here's a good one! I opened up an account for Melodie's son off MY account and MY credit card. I tried to cancel it a few weeks ago and they stated that have to talk to him ONLY to cancel! Why can I open an additional VISA card for a family member and when I want to cancel it, it's a quick call......NOT with *^##%^! AOL! (When you can get a customer service person that speaks English!).*

    *I think AOL gets the WORST speaking English employees to talk to customers that want to cancel. They probably figure that the customer will get so fed up trying to communicate, they will hang up and move on to something else in life!

    AOL will continue to live on because there are still a TON of places without broadband;
    mainly a lot of rural places.

    I used to make decent money off their stock in the 90's because I would buy it before Christmas
    when it was low, everybody would go buy this newfangled thing called a PC and get connected
    to the 'Information Superhighway' at Christmas or so, AOL would report subscribership to be
    up 10% at the end of Q1, then everyone else would jump on the bandwagon and drive the
    shareprice up, then I'd dump it a month later.

    Can't do that anymore...

    I had the same problem almost 8 years ago. It took me almost a month to get it resolved. All I gotta say is good luck. Now the only aol program i use is AIM.
