    I suppose that about sums that up. I am hoping someone will chime in a tell me this is typical and that there is a broken hose, etc... ha. In any event, it is maybe most likely I need a heater core, but anyone have directions or pics on changing one out? Any thoughts otherwise? It is definately coolant out of the middle vents, not a ton, but enough it will spit at me.

    Looks as if a heater core isnt a lot of fun...

    any help would be great! Car is a 95, 6 speed. beauitiful car....

    if no one else has had this, which i doubt, I will take pics all the way through it....

    I've never had to do one on 456 but my guess is that the heater core was the first part to go down the assembly line (like the belt on some washing machines :rolleyes:). They built the car around it.

    Cap it off for the summer, by returning both lines back into each other. That will stop the damage to your interior also. Make it a project for next winter! edit -- LARGE project ;)

    do you do that from inside the car or outside in the engine bay?? I havent looked heavy yet....

    Sure sounds like a heater core as was stated. i would block it off as well. I wonder how hard they are to get to on your car.

    Anyone have a diagram on the heater core for a 456?? trying to figure out a plan to bypass the heater core... it has multiple lines going into it, etc....

    I will post the pics online, but quickly here, I am not much of one to half ass it, so decided today was as good as any for the heater core removal. I have completely removed everything and am down to ordering my new parts tomorrow... pics to follow. Not for the weak at heart, but not a horrible job either. Just very teadeous with the leather, etc to prevent damage.

    You're doing the right thing by replacing the heater core...but looking at your work behind and in front of you, had it been *me* I would have disconnected the input and output coolant lines, poured in copious amounts of Prestone's "Super Sealer" or Stop Leak, and then used a small electric pump to push it all through that rad to see if I could stop the leak (without getting any of those products in my engine that way).

    Holy Shxt!! BTW, its best to have the part there with you so you can immediately replace it and remember where everything goes.. If it takes a week to get the part you might forget where every little screw goes..

    Good luck with it, I guess you'll still be running for Summer after all.

    yeah, the rear seats had to be removed to get the center console out. I have labled everything inside out... I didnt have parts standing by because I had no idea exactly what was needed. I am axctually replacing the entire evap unit and wiring harness. Someone spliced in alarms, radar detectors, maybe a tea kettle etc under the dash... hate that stuff... will be right when finished. And 10 points to Daniel at ricambi... very very helpful... most all day yesterday!

    its truly wasnt that bad and it NOT on the top ten things to never do again list... tho today that list has more than 10 things... it is just very tedious due to the 3/4 of a whole cow they put into a 456... I would be more than happy to help anyone that needed it... though we all might wait and see if mine runs again!! Ha...


    will post reassembly hopefully this weekend if daniel gets me the parts... he is supposed to have them here .... praying to the fed-ex gods from italy...

    also have new speedline 3 peice wheels and tires coming.... a really needed upgrade in my book for the car. And daniel has gotten me new rear mufflers to give a little more umph to the sound....

    anyone want or need the old evap unit for parts?? Not much good on it, but to someone it might save the day....

    last time i used that coolant sealer it gummed up all kinds of coolant lines on my BMW and murdered the dual climate control system... maybe a unique event, but scares me off... wouldnt even consider that stuff anymore. I hear that it comes even in new cars anymore, but still biased is biased.

    Sheesh! and I thought I had a reputation for jumping in where others fear! (reshim 48 valves? no problem).

    Nice work Todd. Some questions - mode of failure of the heater core? - corrosion? If that is the case we may all be looking at this job sometime in the future...

    It seems that the new(ish) generation of aluminium radiators and heater cores corrode much faster than the old brass ones. BMW, M-B & Alfa all seem to be having the same problems after 10-15 years.

    A mate who works for a M-B dealer relates the problem with M-B radiators failing - problem is that the coolant leaks into the integral transmission cooler - replacement trans needed, as well as the
    radiator. I dont' believe that the 456 radiator/oil cooler can fail the same way.

    Any one here replaced a 456 or 550 radiator?

    I think the mode of failure truly and sadly was an accident in a previous life with previous owner. I think its likely that the unit was not forseen to be unrepairable ( 50lb unit brutally complex) was found j-b welded, and lines tied off, etc. I was very fortunbate to have a seller that truly was oblivious to the damage and has graciously paid for a large portion of the parts. The actual heater core itsself seemed to be in relatively good condition, i.e. no corrosion, no other known issues, but had a puncture would (or 8) that were sealed back up with some sort of quick epoxy... apearing to be j-b weld. Now I am a big fan of JB, but come on guys... if you have to go to the trouble to remove the unit (see pics above), why not spend the cash to do it right??? I cannot simply imagine taking that apart and not replacing it. I will attach pics of my old unit. Amazing what someone did.

    Conseqently, the seller of the car is the Noble dealer in Ohio, Dean, a very true gentleman. I have done other deals with Dean and his company (un ferrari) and have had the same treatment.

    Morale here... I am not convinced this is going to be a common 456 issue, and frankly everything was very well assembled and very impressive. Not a job for the weak of heart, but with some care and assembly, will be all back together this weekend. (hopefull) Will post assembly pics as well.

    I do have the blowers and servos if any of you guys need them or want such. The evap comes as a complete unit and being mine was completely disassembled via epoxy, it was the only choice for me. PM if you need parts... not needing anything for them.

    I had a new radiator put in at the dealer and it was expensive. I can't remember exactly, maybe I'll lookit up. We were going to repair it but wasn't recomended.

    Your ambition is admirable. I'll bet you get it done right and will feel good about it after all the hard work is done.

    My 1995 Ferrari 456 GT with assembly number prior to 19500 & 40K miles is blowing hot coolant through the vents like smoke. Especially apparent under acceleration. If it were any other car I would immediately assume heater core failure. But in this thread it seems one faces replacing the entire evaporator unit pn 64450300. Is that correct? I have not time, talent, tools or know-how to pull the car apart myself, so it means scheduling shop time. Is the labor to temporarily bypass the system less involved than just getting it fixed?

    Make sure it is not just the evaporator drain hose clogged.
