Service at the dealership...Is it a must, or would a service done at a well known Ferrari Mechanic be as good? Resale wise

For small routine service, I have used a local shop. For the major service I use the dealer. I don't think it is a must but I feel more secure knowing the dealer is behind a major. I know other owners who do their own service including the major and some that never use the dealer. Hopefully a dealer is up to date on all recalls and updates as well.

    Dealer.

To answer one of your questions -- If you were buying a preowned car, and EVERYTHING ELSE BEING EQUAL, would you rather the paperwork show a dealer or independent?

The dealer will be there next month. In my neck of the woods, I have heard nothing but good things about Ferrari of Atlanta service. They have two special techs, one of whom won some kind of award in a worldwide tech contest held at the factory!

And from reading other posts on the board, it doesn't hurt from having service work done at the dealer when it comes time to buy a car from the dealer.

As a very broad generalization, and only as my personal opinion -

360 or newer should show big services done at a dealer.

    355 could go either way.

348 or older dealer service would be neither plus nor minus. In my opinion a good independent shop is likely more knowledgeable about the older cars than the dealer is.

The dealers often don't have staff knowledgeable about the older cars. It's called staff turnover...

Over the last several years, the local dealer sent a lot of the 348 or earlier work our (independent) way, too much trouble, they said.

Disagree about the 360. One of the most pleasant F-cars for the independent to work on. Yes, they have built them better, they're cheaper to maintain, to repair and they are more reliable now. Makes the mechanic look good! :)

The 360's and 550's are now nearly a decade old. US franchise law requires the dealerships and OEM's to stock and repair only out to seven...

I bet Ferrari owners who are fortunate to live w/in driving or towing distance from Eugenio and had their car(s) serviced by him will much prefer to buy a used Ferrari that has been maintained and serviced (minor and major service) by him. In fact, when I am in the market for my next Ferrari, I will first ask Eugenio if any of his customers is selling their car before I check any other source for a used Ferrari. All things being equal (color, model, year, milage, etc.), I will go on record to say that I will pay a premium for a Eugenio maintained Ferrari over ANY used car serviced by a Ferrari dealership.

the problem with a 308 is that many dealers won't work on them any more but rather take on newer models so where does that leave you, going to a machinic who has a passion for the 308's and will do it right and trying to get it done in 2 days

Dealers stocking parts, now there is a joke..
I think the law states the Manufacturer has to supply parts for ten years after production stops

I stand corrected. After working as a factory tech at Fiat dealership and successfully (?!?) transitioning to a Bertone and Pininfarina dealership (remember Malcolm Bricklin?), I thought it was seven. Maybe that's just what it felt like working with orphans...

I'd be a whole lot suspicious of Ferrari Awards being handed out to Ferrari Mechanics working at Ferrari dealerships who're trying to sell Ferrari cars. now an independent evaluation would be a whole different thing.

Us old and ugly Ferrari owners have to find love where we can.

depends on the dealer and the independent. Lots of independents used to work at the dealer and went on their own.

What he said, at least for the older cars. Bobileff knows the vintage and classic stuff inside/out.

+1. The dealers order parts for the older cars when they need them, same as an independent.
