When driving my TS with the roof panel removed and the windows up, it makes a tremendous racket - a nasty, thumping harmonic resonance. If I roll the windows down a few inches, that thumping noise dissipates, but then I have the wind noise from the down windows. Is this normal? Is there a fix? I didn't see anything on my search ... anyone experience this?

I don't think I have EVER driven my 348ts with the targa top removed and the door windows up. So I'm not aware of the noise you are describing. Could it possibly be the targa top itself in the storage position behind the seats? The top is supposed to be inside its boot, with the straps holding it against the bulkhead, and with the pins at the bottom being held in place by the rubber grommets. I can't really think of anything else that would be moving around???

Simple solution... if you're going to have your windows UP, leave the top ON! Trust me, you look like a retard driving around with your roof off and both windows up. Me (and most people I know) spend alot time pointing and laughing at bucket-heads driving around in thier convertibles... top down, all windows up!

Wind going over the car is creating a vacuum inside the car, hence the noise... its just physics. To eliminate this effect, you'd need a massive air deflector mounted on the top of the windshield frame and wrapping around the sides of the car. Take a look at the sunroof air deflector on a newer Honda or Toyota car... make one 3 times bigger, and bolt it to the top of your windshield frame, problem solved!!

Well, I may look like a retard with my windows up, but way up here in the Great Northwest, I am in good company. When it's cold and the sun is out, we like to keep the roofs off, and the windows up. If you enjoy pointing and laughing, you should come up here on a cold sunny day - you wouldn't be able to contain yourself with me and all of my fellow 'tards surrounding you on the freeway!

I understand the physics - hence my reference to the physical phenomenon: harmonic resonsance. It occurs in my TS at or above 50 mph.

We only get about 2 months of warm weather here. This weekend it will bein the low 40s, for example. Plus, at 75mph on the freeway, it's nice to get rid of the wind noise, and listen to the engine. But I don't think I'm willing to mount the 355 challenge wing on my windshield frame, so I guess I'll move to Arizona.

I don't think it's unusual at all to have the top off and windows up. On a crisp fall or spring day, you can turn up the heat and still enjoy the drive -- nothing better. If others want to laugh, who cares? Their problem, not yours.

For what it's worth, mine does not make any such noise or have any buffetting when the top is off and the windows up (at least up to reasonable highway speeds). And that is either with or without having the top stowed behind the seats. There must be something disturbing the airflow around your car and causing the buffetting, but I have no idea what it might be. The only thing I can think of is to check carefully for any misalignments or loose trim around with windshield, rear windows and side windows.

Even here in Houston the fall and spring mornings can be chilly. I leave the top at home and put the windows up untill it warms up a little. I know the sound that you are referring to. But I am usually too busy driving to pay too much attention to it.. :)

As far as having windows up when top down I do this always on the highway makes for less wind noise and disturbance

plus unlike the Fratelli I do not use gel, so my hair tends to whip me in the face...:D

I never complaint about noise, neither my passengers, when driving my 348 TS (or my 355 GTS), with the top off. It's normal to listen that aerodinamic noise, but I can have a normal conversation or listen to the radio, when the windows are up.
It's just the same with my convertible Mercedes....
At least, when top is on we can go full speed, not like some Lamborghinis...

Most convertibles will do this also. The simple solution is to lower the windows a tiny amount. This will alleviate the pressure differential and the booming will cease.

So it sounds like some guys don't have the problem at all, and some have it a little but it doesn't bother them. Eric, Thanks for the suggestion - I will check around and see if there is some problem with something disturbing the airflow. Whyte - that works: when I lower the windows a few inches, the slip stream is destroyed and the sound goes away. I just feel like, damn, this is a freakin' Ferrari. It ought to be designed to have no noise at freeway speeds in this configuration. (It's like bad sunroof design: at freeway speeds, my '98 Jag XJR had noise with it open, my '00 M5 did not). Anyway, maybe when the new exhaust system is installed I'll have something else to listen to. Thanks brothers!

I can't remember if it was my 308GTS or my 328GTS, but one of them did the same thing with the wind noise/buffeting with windows all the way up, and driving over 80mph. If I lowered the speed, or dropped the windows a couple inches, then it went away.

I used to get a similar effect on an older, glass roofed Porsche Targa. NOT MINE, my former G'friend's car she would bring home from the dealership [BTW, one of my favorite Porsches she would bring home....good old oil cooled and all]

IF [and she would insist, blonds and their hair something] you roll back the top and keep the windows near the top the wind would come in and create a sort of heavy resonance. Try bringing down the windows a bit, and see the change in pitch etc.

You may have to get a GLASS top :)
