I'm out.
I'm currently on the fence and chatting about it with some friends. But while it does sound cool, I can't help thinking that the plot has been lost. -mick
They are incorporating all the "pieces" that work at each of the other events such as The Quail [cuisine, music], the event hosted at the hangers of Monterey Airport [planes, motorcycles], etc...nothing like being original; it's laughable!
still no one has told me where the other events are going to be at,friday is the concorso Italiano, then saturday is something to do with a rally on sunday is that one that Jay Leno goes to,what do you think would happen if those were at the air port,no one will come
Ok let's put this into perspective. If you are going to be in Monterey that weekend you have a couple of choices. Friday you can go out to the track for some of the practice sessions. Most people will be going to the track on Saturday, so 2 days may be too much for some. Or you can go to the Quail, a very expensive event that is limited number to 3,000 people. I also believe the Quail is already sold out. The Quail is a great event with great cars no doubt about it. But the very significant cars that are there are ones that I've usually seen at least once before at other events. It is as much a social gathering for automotive historians that consider Pebble too crowded with the fashion accessory car owners. Unless you just want to do some sight seeing around the area that leaves Concoso. It is still the least expensive car show that weekend, while it may have expanded beyond Italian cars, it still gives you more to see for the same entry fee. You can go, make the best of it and have a good time with the largest gathering of Italian car owners in the country. Or you can piss and moan about how they should do this or they should do that. Or if think you can do a better job, put up your 250k, secure all the venues, permits, catering etc and put up with all the egos complaining and HOPE you are successful enough where you can turn a profit after putting a year's worth of work into it! So who's stepping up and writing the check?
There's 2 entrances east of the main entrance. One off of Blanco Rd. and the other east on Reservation Rd. Both were built last year to accomodate the CSUMB campus which has taken over much of the airport. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Uh, I think you might have a problem dodging the cars on the runway. But if put your pontoons on, you can land in the Salinas River just north and below the runway, if there's water in it. LOL. My first skydive was at the Marina airport a couple of years ago. Took my daughter and we both jumped with "Skydive Monterey Bay". Was a kick and luckily we both landed in the dirt just southeast of the runway.
The one thing I've never understood is why the extremely modified (not all) "Ford" powered Panteras are always in front at the best showing locations in the event? Not that I don't like Panteras, but there are some very rare and completely original species sitting out there that I think would be better viewed where the Panteras usually are. Maybe the bling brings in the crowds, eh?
it looks like some in the vintage thread are talking about the concorso Italiano too! only they are not going also, instead they are talking about doing a drive and picnic because they too are feed up,maybe we all should do this from other threads and put our own C.I. together
I was born and raised in Monterey. Just got back in fact 20 min ago...what a beautiful place. However, the Marina airport is just a total pit. Sorry....but it's awful...concrete and weeds. Ugly, crummy place for an exotic car show. I'll be there this year, should be interesting. But only because I already have my ticket Could this be the end of Concorso? Certainly this will be just an awful venue. Fred
The entry to the event is easy, the parking is going to be excellent, and the city is going to do a lot to make this venue ready for this show. I say stop your complaining because that is all that seems to be going on is the pity party and the pile on. I agree with Italiancars comments. Get a grip. Concorso italiano is awesome and this will be a great year. Get your heads out and see the glass half full you guys are just whining for whining sake. No one ever built a monument to a critic. Give me a break!
targa - I've been attending Concorso since the early nineties, had my F-car shown, judged and won. I have done the early bird sign-up for this year, however, I'm seriously considering the once unthinkable - skip Concorso this year, the new venue is just not my cup of tea and I have little desire to bring my F-car there. You seemed to know a lot about the future and have dedicated your first and only four FChat entries to this topic. Could you share with us your past experience of Concorso and how did you determine that this one is going to be so great? Thank you. sting
I too have been going for some time and over the years it just became a bigger mess than it was worth. Always good to see the familiar faces of everyone in one place but spend 2 hours there at most then get the hell out. It's a complete zoo. Moving it to yet another random location with hard concrete (if you're walking all day, it's nice to be on grass), as a random mix of all things, plus with such poor planning (cmon, people reserve tickets and placards far in advance and they release information about the event now?) - it doesn't bode well for the event. Over the years my interest in Concorso has dropped to virtually nil and shuffling over to Quail has been nothing less than a complete delight.
Since I have already purchased my ticket, I will go check it out and bring my car. I love the idea of vintage airplanes. Even better if they offer rides in P-51 Mustangs out over the bay. I still love seeing all the different cars including the corral parking of the other car clubs. As for other events the FCA should have an event area for the vintage races on Sat. at Laguna. There is Pebble Beach on Sunday. I do not know of any rally on Sunday with Jay Leno. The weekend before is the Ferrari Challenge races and I think also the FXX cars. The next day is the Ferrari and Porsche car show in Carmel and the next day another car show there of all cars. The Carmel show was excellent last year and is free to the public. Does anyone know about the some drives on Wed. or Thurs. of cars being shown at Pebble Beach? I think they earn extra points for the show if they go in it.
I am going to give it a go, it should be interesting. I don't think the owner had much of a choice as he probably checked every golf course in the area, so this is the site that was available and he is trying to make the venue work the best he can. That being said I hope he reads all these posts and reads between the lines. Take extra good care of the participants and follow through with the promises that the traffic/parking won't be bad.
LOL! Ya think? Good luck to the promoter and to anyone who attends. Can't wait to hear about how it all turns out.
I just received an email from the Concorso Italiano and they are changing the location this year to the Marina California Airport in the City of Marina.
