Years ago I read in an English classic car mag, probably Classic and Sports Cars, that cracked blocks can be repaired.

It is called "stitching" and when complete the thing looks like it has stitches.

You would almost certainly do this on your pre war Bugatti GP and possibly on your 365.

If you have someone fix the crack make sure they have YEARS of experience welding FERRARI blocks!
Ferrari and other makers of the sort use their own blends of alloys, so finding the correct filler material can be a real pain. If you use incompatible TIG rods, it won't meld correctly and you'll get a weak repair. You'll see this as little 'pock marks' in the finished weld.

I'm getting depressed on several levels from reading this string. First, it truly sucks that the block needs this work but at least you have the good sense to accept that neither it or the rest of the car will eat anything or run away from home on their own. Fix it next year or ten years from now (its all labor) and it won't get any worse. Second, the fact that these cars are being scrapped and parted out as fast as they are is sad. I suppose all that means is that the handful of survivors -- like what 25 in the US at this point will get more valuable. That appreciation will pay for your block repair.

don't be depressed. blank happens. the car would already be fixed but for a depression in my industry. things have picked up for two weeks this months. last month there was only one week of business. i purchased three cars this week, first a maserati indy, no motor. second a maseratiQP1, no motor. and last a back to the future car, not running! well maybe i am starting a junk yard. i do have several extra motors, so i am OK on the maserati. 30 min and the delorean is now running. not bad for 6500. hard to pass deals. the indy set me back 4500. makes the fifth indy i own. i am not sure but could be an addicition. back to 365GT4, i am trying to balance passion/value. any input would be welcome. i will be in dayton/columbus ohio tomorrow for car tour, opening at lamborghini ohio opening. they offered a test drive. dinner at handke's sat night. anyone want to join, please call 8596191441. will be at the westin on south high
