this is playing off of the "anyone ever been to cooperstown" thread in the sports section: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=193553
basically, my dad and i want to take a long weekend somewhere, and we're torn between 3 choices, and he left it up to me to decide, so i figured i'd throw it out there and get a little input.
    1) cooperstown. we'd be driving there, about 2000 miles round trip, with stops in either canton or toronto, for the football or hockey hall of fames as well, and a trip to a ball game somewhere. definitely intriguing, as i've always wanted to go to cooperstown, but the downsides are this: lot of driving, and anytime i go to a place like cooperstown, i always feel like i never get the most out of it, depending on how much time we stay there.
    2) florida. we'd more than likely fly into tampa bay, we've managed to find cheap airfare on american, we'd pretty much drive along the coast and check out beaches along the way. we'd also try to get in a trip to cape canaveral, (anyone know if there's a shuttle launch in mid-late may?) upsides: girls in bikinis, beaches, sun downsides: although it's been years, i've been to florida (went there when i was around 10 for disney world) and there's not a whole lot we're planning on doing other than beaches and sight seeing.
    3) washington dc. i've been there twice before, but i've had nowhere near enough time to get a good amount of sight seeing in, for instance, i've always wanted to go to the national archives, but never have. my dad has always wanted to visit dc, but has never been there, so it'd be a treat for him to visit. upsides: iirc, everything was free, but then again, both times i've been there i was on a tour (national boy scout jamboree) and the prices may have been worked into the price of the trip initially, i don't remember for a fact. we'd get to see everything again, smithsonian, white house (probably no tour though) arlington, etc. my dad would love it. downsides: price (definitely the most expensive of the 3 when we factor in hotel and airfare, and time, once again, a long weekend isn't enough time to see everything we would want in dc.

so, input is much appreciated, thanks!

I live in Clearwater, so that would be out for me.

I have been to the NFL hall of fame, good, but I thought it would be better. Probably the same for cooperstown.

D.C., I would love to go there. As you say, there is so much to see, it seems fresh every time you go.

been there, done that, i was up in chicago during the '06 world series championship season, that's 2006, not 1906, :D, said hi to steve bartman, so it was a trip well worth it.
we had thought about california, but flights aren't at a good rate for when we're looking at, so that was a mute point, i would love to check out dodger stadium at some point in time though.

One of the things to keep in mind about DC is a lot of the museums are free. You can also get everywhere by using the Metro. If you timed it right, you might be able to check out a Nationals game and head up to Baltimore for an Orioles game. Baltimore is only a 45min drive or so from DC.

I may be wrong, but that doesn't sound like a trip that his dad would really love. My vote goes to D.C.

and the winner is....cooperstown. we just sat and thought that there's a lot more we can do driving cross country compared to flying to tampa and sitting on a beach all day (although i will regret not choosing a place with more bikinis) who knows, dc is only a 6 hour drive from cooperstown, we may still spend a day there, get some stuff in. thanks for the input guys!

Oh, good for both of you. Do take the extra time to get your Pop to and from DC - it'll be as "confirming" to him as it was, actually, still is to mine. Just make sure you're driving, so he can take it all in.

It'll take some of the mystery out of where the tax dollars go and aside from the landmarks he's read about, seen on TV and film through thick and thin - there's a certain reverence for Arlington National Cemetery and awe for scale of Pentagon and it's representation that our Pops have, even on drive-by, and War Memorials for times and places which he'll not take for granted, either. More to it than meets the eye.

The next rocket launch was scheduled for mid May but right now its undetermined.

"Discovery and seven astronauts are scheduled to launch at 5:02 p.m. May 31 on a mission to deliver the Japanese Kibo science laboratory to the International Space Station."

one thing that i've done both times i've been in dc is see the changing of the guard, as well as other landmarks, at arlington, that's a must see for anyone that goes to dc. we drove by the pentagon (which was fairly close to arlington, iirc) and the scale is amazing. i've had the opportunity of going both before and after 9/11, and the changes were amazing. the only bad thing about taking a day to go there is that there's nowhere near enough time to get to see a whole lot.
