For the first time since 1996, Formula One looks set to miss out on the videogame market about Sony and Bernie Ecclestone failed to agree a new deal.

Sony has held the exclusive rights to produce F1 games since 2003 with the most recent edition of the game, which was based on the 2006 F1 season, coming out on the PS3 last year.

The five-year license reportedly cost Sony $15m per year.

However, it expired at the end of 2007 meaning a new contract was needed but that has, according to GamesRadar, failed to materialise.

The website reports that Ecclestone is "playing hardball" over the fee, wanting more than what Sony are prepared to pay.

And with no resolution on the cards as well no work having begun on a new edition of the game, it looks as is F1's gaming fans will be without a videogame this season.

Good job Bernie. You are getting paid millions of dollars for a company to promote your product for you, and you turned them down.

Think of all the fun we'll be missing playing as Hamilton and crashing out Alonso? (or vice versa) And spying on other teams and stealing info, exchanging emails with other drivers about secret information, accusing others of cheating......:)

I thought Bernie sold a majority stake of F1 to Kirch Media, which is now bankrupt.

I actually think that's great. I'd love to see a real F1 simulation on the computer, and not those games Sony has published only for the PS.

You should look the big picture. If a company as large Sony isn't willing to pay whatever amount over 15 mil a year Bernie now wants, what makes you think someone else will?

Bernie wants money, so if no one is willing to pay the price, he will eventually lower it, giving other companies with less budget than Sony the possibility to purchase the license - preferably someone who doesn't just create a simple arcade game ...

I seriously doubt that. If no one steps up, Bernie will re-up with Sony. He can get the most money out of them and knows it.

maybe Polyphony, makers of Gran Turismo, will buy he rights.
They must have done a good amount of work getting the physics right on an F1 car
when they put the F2007 in GT5 prologue - and they could afford the $15M - unlike many of the other game manufacturers

Maybe EA will pick it back up

I'd like to think they F1 will not **** this up - but given they lost the USGP - still don't broadcast in F1 - even though **** like Rachel Ray's 30 minute meals
and Tyler Perrys House of Payne have managed to cross the HD threshold- I'm not gonn a hold my breath

Not a big football fan Brian, but I live 18 miles from Manchester--about the same from Liverpool, so it's tricky who to get behind, MU are like the Ferrari brand here the best. All I can say is when I was a kid I supported Man City.

I'am I right in thinking your a MU fan..?

Are you referring to the greatest football/soccer team on the planet? Well then yes I am. Wonderful season this will be with Premiership and UEFA Trophies in the case.

Who gives a ****. Gran Turismo 5 is coming out at the end of this year. Did you even play the 2006 F1 game, it was seriously pathetic. One of the worst games I've ever played, I rented it for a week for $20, I played it for half an hour and felt dirty. It was in insult to F1, never has it been more obvious that the developers didn't care and it was pushed to meet a deadline. Bernie probably wasn't bargaining for more money, he was just setting the price high so they wouldn't bid and therefore lose their rights so some other company could pick up the game.

Ideally the game would be merged with Gran Turismo 5. Which would be unbelievable, fingers crossed.

It seems a lot of people think Bernie is just a jerk who cares about his money and nothing else. In 1986 when Elio de Angelis died in testing, Bernie's method for choosing a replacement driver may seem out of character to you guys. He gave it to the only ex-driver who didn't contact him about the empty seat. Derrick Warrick.

actually, F1 2006 is really nice. they have some slip ups tho, like when ur lapping the backmarkers, they just stop dead on the racing line. then sometimes, u have to queue in the pits, etc.

Polyphony has taken about 4 years to even come close to releasing GT5, that's why they put out prologue, people were getting impatient. Who even knows how long it would take them to make a proper formula one game. I also played F1 2006 and I don't feel it's that bad either. It takes a while to get a game right and Sony was on the right track.

Bernie is a jerk who only cares about money. One good thing he might have one doesn't superceed all the crappy things he has done.

That's a good choice. There are only a few who could pull this off properly.

    Codemasters
    Blimey! (they couldn't afford it)
    SimBin (ditto)
    SCEE
    Bizarre
    MGS

Glad to see it going forward.

Might be a little while before they get one released. They are just about to release their new game GRiD. Luckily its based on their EGO game engine which should facilitate a quick release for the F1 game. You can check out a demo of GRiD on xbox live (under "Race Driver GRID).

Im really happy to hear this.
