Has anyone upgraded their iPhone from perhaps 8GB to 16GB? There are rumors the new 3G iphone will be $199 and I want to know if I can just switch the SIM from my 8GB to a new 3G when it comes out and not have to renew my contract.

I seriously doubt that there will be significant price drops. Speculation is pure speculation. Even Apple employees are not allowed to speculate on price nor technology.

If you look at the history of Apple's products and their prices - they do not drop. When something does drop, it is a shift in platform or technology. i.e. - shuffle down to 49 bucks instead of the initial offering a few years back at 99.

Isn't this more of a subsidy by AT&T than a price drop by Apple? The information that I've seen indicates that the price of the iPhone will remain the same in Apple stores, and that you can only get the discounted rate from an AT&T store when you sign up for a two-year contract.

Buy an iPhone at the listed price at AT&T or the Apple store. AT&T provides the service under a new 2 year contract. That's it. No discount anywhere.

That's not what I've been reading. This is admittedly speculation at this point, but just the same it's worth consideration.

    http://techland.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/04/29/att-to-cut-the-price-of-apples-new-iphone/

"AT&T is preparing to subsidize $200 of the cost of a new iPhone, bringing the price down to $199 for customers who sign two-year contracts, the source says. Apple is expected to have two versions of the new iPhone, an 8-gigabyte-memory and a 16-gigabyte-memory model with price tags widely expected to be $399 and $499."
