Hi guys, I have been looking around eBay at buying some 1:18 Ferrari models, you guys have heaps that we can't get over here.

I have asked a few sellers about shipping a box of 6 over to me, these guys want moon beams! ($120 + usd)So I’m looking for advice on a reasonable shop to deal with, someone who doesn't want to pay of their mortgage with the profit from my freight bill.

Any buyer experience or advice on how to ship them greatly appreciated.

Each model is about 3lb-1.5kl. To ship 6 model in 1 box to New Zealand Priority mail should be about $90 to $95. It is possible that they do not have box for 6 models and using 2 boxes, that increases the cost.

I've shipped models world-wide, including NZ. I think Cavallino is spot on to package 6 in a box and ship should run just under $100. At $120 it's a bit high - but certainly not outrageous, IMO. Do you now if the shipping is flat-rate, or actual cost? Also where are they coming from - the States?

Thank you for the reply, I was thinking they could use the boxes that hot wheels sent the models out in, they are designed to fit 6, is this still the case or do HW send models out in larger bulk? $90 is more reasonable; at that price I would be keen.

Hi Roy, do you remember shipping the models over to me? I'm sure it was not as expensive as this, but I could be wrong, or maybe you looked after me on the shipping cost?
I'm not sure if the shipping quotes I have had were flat rate, but I emailed the sellers directly and asked for a quote, both quotes were from the States.

Just to give you some back ground on the question, I was working out the cost per model and to add another $20 usd per model for shipping just seemed expensive, perhaps it is not.

Most of HW models come 4 in a box.

If you find a seller ask them to use USPS not UPS.
The shipping prices between the 2 are pretty big.

According to USPS.COM for around 18lbs it is about $95.00, which you have stated. However, what USPS.COM does NOT tell you is they do not include the volumetric weight which USPS also charges for and is not accounted for on the online calculator. The size of the box when over a certain size (which is definately the case with 6 diecast models) will increase the cost from $95 to probably around $120.00.

Expect it to go up even more as gas prices continue to increase. I am sure we will be getting an additional surcharge very soon.

UPS prices will be FAR more expensive than USPS.

If you want models sent to NZ, you will need to pony up the cash.

Would you consider surface mail? I ship model cars and real car parts to a friend near Auckland. Pretty much everything goes by ship because postage is less. It takes longer, but you will pay less.

Jog my memory... what all did I ship you. It seemed like I ended up covering $20 or so of the shipping costs...

Yes, time is not of the essence, who is a good company to deal with if i want to go land based? Do you have a ball park guess for sending say 6 models (1:18)? :)

There is another huge advantage in using USPS over a courier company - you're less likely to picked up for GST...
DHL, UPS, etc, all usually have a resident customs officer checking every single parcel and ensuring that duty and GST (for goods over NZ$400), is collected before releasing them to you. And, while 'models' are theoretically exempt from duty, it can be a right royal pain having to argue that with the customs agent every single time you recieve some models. Whereas NZ Post very seldom picks up on this, thankfully.

And yes, US$120 shipping sounds about right for half a dozen 1/18 diecasts.
