That is what I am thinking. I know it would be a steal, but did you see the one up in the NE somewhere that was red with the Tan/Black daytona seats? $23.9k! That was 6 or 8 months ago now I guess. SA-WEET looking ride!

    BTW, I am looking for a steal...if I can't steal it I won't buy it now...I'll just wait.

If I followed the numbers correctly, the car lost $23.5K in three years. Dave was that a bad period (04-07) for 4XX cars?

if a car is sold in the US, the exported to Canada, then reimported back to the US, does one have to pay duties on the car again (since it was in the USA to begin with)?

    ^^^^^^^

Probably, but the more concerning thing is will it get in w/o having to go through DOT/EPA certs again! I asked the seller that question and they were clueless! It shouldn't but if it does not have its DOT/EPA papers well, you could be looking at HUGE money to re-cert that bad boy!

I remember that car and remember driving it while it was here. I haven't seen it in years but remember it was very clean back then.

I live in Calgary and would be happy to have my shop inspect the car for you at no charge if you were to pursue it.

Is it 25 or 20 years old when a car no longer needs DOT/EPA cert. for importation?

Good question. I think it is 25, but I am not sure that it applies to both EPA AND DOT... In TX our EPA stuff falls off at 25 years. For importing a car under the show/display law, DOT NEVER applies but EPA DOES... Go figure! We are talking about the Federal Gov here, NOTHING is easy, simple or logical!

Most of that data matches mine exactly, except that I don't believe that the 4/07 data point of $26K is a selling price or even an asking price. Most likely it was the high bid or the bid at the time that the data was pulled. Note that the current bid is at $26K and the car hasn't met reserve yet.

Looks like a very nice car.

Guys, you can import whatever you want if it's over 25 years....DOT, EPA, doesn't matter. If it's over 25 years, the car gets in without issue.
It's 15 years in Canada, which is why you see Integrales and all sorts of stuff there now.

That is interesting - so no federalization would be needed? I have a 26-year-old Caterham in the UK - it would be nice to have it over here.

    Brian,

Do you have a link to the Federal docs that confirm that. Won't matter in this case because the car is not old enough for here in the USA... But I would still like to see the quote from the DOT/EPA source... If that IS really the case then there is the option of looking for early 400's all over the world instead of right here in the good ol' US of A!

    Brian,

Just got on to my old computer and looked up my links from when I imported my '92 GTS. You are correct sir! Thanks for making me look this up. Considering what I am currently looking for all of this applies!

Here is what the code says. If the car is at least 21 years old (that is based NOT on model year, but on year of production!) then NO EPA certifications are needed! If the car is at least 25 years old then NO DOT certifications are needed! How about that?! So in theory I guess an '84 model year car built in '83 would be FULLY importable today! Very nice!
