I was reading a book about building our first Starship, not Sci Fi, more of a socio political book on how this will be done. The author states that it will probably be private industry bcus Govt is too slow and mostly interested in things that they can tax and how do you tax another star system ?

Anyways he was saying how this ship would most likely use a Matter/AntiMatter drive

He wrote that when this engine was turned on in the 1st second it would produce more power than all of humanity has produced in the last 400 years !!!!!!!!!!

 

Did he go into any specifics? Anyone can make claims and put their words on a page. "How will a Matter/Antimatter drive be constructed with any sort of reliability?"

 

Now that is a friggin’ driveshaft and flywheel.

I understand the efficiencies of a single drive motor, underwater gear and so on. On the other hand, I’m a little surprised that they have all their eggs in one basket with a single motor. Can you imagine what a pig a container ship would be in the middle of the ocean with no power? Maybe they have some other method of power than can spin that drive shaft in the event of failure.

 

Turbocharged? I saw many, many posts about this same engine on another automotive forum, but none ever said it was turbocharged. I'd love to see the turbos for it. I'm not saying it's not true...I'd just really love to see them.

 

Not really, he was interpolating from the speed you would need to cover enormous distances and moving several 1000 tons of spacecraft and from what nuclear scientists told him

Matter/antimatter explosions are amongst the most powerful in the universe so if you can harness this in an engine you have a serious hot rod

The explosion part is where my concern is focused. If they are that powerful, what happens if GM gets the nod to build it? Will I be given enough time to buy a new "Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy" book and wait for a passing ship to give me a lift?

 

I guess we should have Honda or Toyota build it bcus we'd have to mortgage the whole planet if Ferrari builds it

Actually, it was 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm. Do you realize that by simply rounding it off to "5.6 million", you are dismissing 8,312 lb/ft of torque as insignificant?
