I was driving around today when I saw a beautiful red 550 Barchetta by the local tennis courts. I had my DSLR with me in my car, so I got it out and took some nice shots of it. While I was shooting, the owner came up to me, and we started chatting about the car. He said it was a very special car, and I said, "Yeah, it's only one of 448..." He then said it was special for a different reason. He said that it was the prototype version of the car, number 000/448. The plaque on the inside of the car (which I unfortunately didn't get a pic of) said "P9." Does anyone have any more information? Was he lying, or could it be true?

No, it could certainly be true - but there's no way to know for sure without knowing the serial number. Did you physically see the place that said 000/448...?

I doubt the owner of such a fine car would be lying. But his information might be 'off' :)

According to Harald Mergard's Barchetta.cc there were twelve prototypes; P01-P12.

None are different except 001, the speciale for Todt.
I'm not sure, but it is common for prototypes to be used for form and function proving but prior to being sold they are updated to the final production configuration.
