If anyone is looking for a Mondi Coupe, there is one for sale in town here. I've met the owner and can pass along his contact info for anyone looking for a Cpe.

Drats... having owned a red/tan 8 Coupe I just can't get excited about another Mondial with the same color combo. Now if it were the Holy Grail (black/tan) as snj5 so kindly reminded me of (rubbing it in again) you'd most definately have my attention. ;)

I know it was on Ebay at one point and the auction did not end in a sale. Other than that I'm not sure how/when/where he's advertised it. I'm hoping to get over to see the car in the next couple days...

Drove out to the other side of town to see this Mondial Coupe tonight....Couple of impressions for those interested....

    Exterior:
Paint very nice. No obvious blems/flaws, etc... Hard to tell where the bumper was repainted. (The whole bumper was repainted) Paint is clean, but needs a polish and wax to really shine.
Aftermarket wheels stick out past the fenderwells, especially in the rear. Love it or hate it....that's personal preference. Owner has the originals, however they need new rubber.

Interior: Leather is dried out and dirty. A proper cleaning and feeding would bring this back to life easily and it would really make the interior look sharp! Would be fun too. :)
All switches work except: passenger window acting up. Goes up and down slower than the drivers side and if you stop 1/2 way it sputters and you have to click the switch a couple times. Everything else works as it should. Sunroof too.

Engine: Rear bank dist. seal leaking and 1 drop from oil pan after test drive. Engine a little dirtier than the pictures show. It's been 5 years and ~2,000 miles or so since last major, so depending on which camp you are in....

Test Drive: What a very different car from my GT4. :) It's been a while since I've driven a 3.2 of any type. Motor pulls as it should right up to ~7k. 2nd gear a little *notchy* when cold. Improved a little when warmed up, but not perfect. I don't suspect any issues per se, just a data point. No grinding of any type in the gear box. Nice and smooth thru the rest of the gears. Brakes work as they should. Did a couple panic stops and they were fine.

My opinion (take it for what it's worth) is that this would make someone a very nice driver. May or may not need a belt service, oil leak(s) fixed and interior cleaned/fed. Other than that, it is minus the original keys (owners has spares only) and the leather binder. (he does have 2 owners manuals) If you want a 'driver' 3.2 Mondi Coupe, this may be worth a deeper look.

    Jim,

Thanks for representing the seller and your phone call about your test drive. Don't forget to add this car comes with ZERO service records with a mention of a prior service 5 years ago, but not documented. Missing tools, prior collision paint work, and non-original keys may be red flags to some. With that said, the seller is quite ambitious with his asking price, my $.02. I've owned 5 Mondials, and still looking for #6. ;)

You're welcome, and thanks for adding the rest in.

One other thing that I noticed about the car is that the clutch is very easy to operate, especially compared to my GT4. It grabs almost immediately as you let it out. My car as just a little more freeplay.
The only similarities between my GT4 and this 3.2 Mondial are that they are both Ferrari 2+2's. Other than that they are night and day...:)

Somebody please tell me what those two little protrusions are for on the front bumper. Surely they're not for mounting a license plate.........

A "lighter" clutch is always nice but I don't know how keen I would be on a clutch that grabs super quick when you start to let it out. At least on a street car. I suppose that can be adjusted to some extent.

I drove it too last summer. It was no-sale at Auburn where I got the #. Then Ebay after I made an offer on it. Glad some of the stuff has been fixed. The seller was very up front about the colision damage, (deer hit) and he did not seem to be hiding anything, let me poke around it on a lift, etc... Was a good guy to work with. Old service was at Sewell Lexus in Texas. That and a carfax (clean, miles tracked properly) are the only records.

Met the owner last year when it was posted on Ebay. At the time it was a 4 cylider car and I chose not to take it for a run. The owner was very up front regarding the known history and everything else seemed to work well. He was also exceedingly fair when we discussed a price and with neither of us knowing why half the engine was not working he grew very concerned regarding his Ebay posting and any misrepresentations. I suspected it was more then just a minor tune-up issue and I'm glad to find out I was mostly wrong and it's now running. Best of luck to whom ever gets her!

Can you elaborate on that? I really like the look of the 3.2 mondial, but I have no idea how it feels compared to a GT4.

It seems that people who haven't driven a GT4 lump it in with the Monidal automatically because it has rear seats. It also seems that when someone has driven both a GT4 and a Mondial that they remark how really different they are. I believe Birdman wrote up a bit about this when he drove someone's GT4. I have never driven a Modndial, but it was seeing an ad for a Mondial that got me seriously in the Ferrari market which led to the GT4. Maybe I should find a Mondial for sale and take it for a spin, unless I find someone local to me that has one. (I think there might be more GT4s in San Jose than Mondials.)

I have only driven Mondials, but from what I hear from GT4 owners, the GT4s are a lot better "track" cars. I think the Mondials are more civil and probably heavier, more "sedan" like versus the feel of the GT4, which may be more "go Kart" like. I may be wrong, but that's my conclusion based on the information I have.

The very first thing that is apparent is the cockpit. The GT4 wraps nicely around the driver. The dash is curved so you can see all the gauges. The driving position is compact, yet comfortable and the steering wheel position is amongst the best in any older Ferrari, hands down! The Mondial is more modern, however the dash/gauge console is straight across with items on the center console that are useless when moving. The steering wheel position is in that group of "I wanted to be a truck, but ended up a Ferrari" and it is oversized. (A smaller wheel is a must have, IMO!) The seats are comforatable, but not at all sporty. My GT4 seats are not the most comfortable, however they are much more supportive and sporty. This is a trade off that I would make any day in a sports car.

Believe it or not, the GT4 has more useable room! The rear seats in the Mondial would not house my 8 and 6 yr old. My GT4 accomodates them nicely. I'm just to the point where I have to move the passenger seat up a notch. I could put more *stuff* in the back seat of my GT4 as well if I needed to.

Driving is like comparing apples to oranges. The GT4 is carburated and RAW, where the Mondial is FI and civilized. The GT4 exhaust SINGS while the Mondial is more muted until you hit 6 or 7K. MUCH, MUCH more body roll (even before the suspension rebuild) in the Mondial. There is a noticeable difference in the throttle responsivness, but that's a carb vs. FI thing anyway... The GT4 wraps around the driver like a sports car should. It is low to the ground and stiffly sprung. It is loud and fast. I could listen to the radio in the Mondial...its not an option in my GT4 while in motion. :)

All this being said, the Mondial in general is a nice car. It depends on what you want. Personally, I really like the Mondial Coupes, espacially the Mondial T Coupe! However, I'll keep my GT4 because it is exactly what I want in a 3rd car right now....:)

    FWIW, YMMV!!!!

    Jim,

That's a great post, now I think I want to try a GT4 instead of getting another Mondial. If anyone knows a red one available, let me know, unless you want to sell yours Jim?

    Thanks.

This car is now for sale by MotoeXotica in St. Louis. Here is the link:

    http://www.motoexotica.com/inventory/2087/1987_Ferrari_Mondial.htm

No mention in the ad of the "deer incident" or the "notchy" 2nd Gear.

I was told that they would take $28,000 without the aftermarket wheels, or $30,000 with the wheels. (Personally, I think the prices should be the other way around.)

Much better with aftermarket wheels...don't why you guys get hung up on having factory wheels...they are old and dated...new wheels breathe a new look into the car

I agree -- I like aftermarket wheels, lowered suspension, etc. (I'm just not crazy about those wheels.)
