I've been looking at as many pictures of air box covers as I can find in this forum. Some are crinkle black, some are flat black. Mine had a crinkle finish when I bought it 24 years ago, but needs to be redone. Is there a definitive answer which is correct?
I think that the "crinkles" are the result of misguided repaints. Here is a photo of mine, which is original. Not exactly a high gloss, more of a semi-gloss, but a bit shinier than the satin finish of the expansion tank. Of course, it's doubtful that the factory was 100% consistent in the type of paint that they used. Image Unavailable, Please Login
haven't seen crinkle finish that looks factory applied. a semi-gloss black is what i have always believed to be correct
I think my car's wrinkle finish is original - at least it was that way when I bought it in 1979. At that time it had 17,000 miles and had not been restored in any other way. Car is a 1972 US version Jim Image Unavailable, Please Login
Cool. I've not seen that finish in a Dino, looks really nice, nicer than the semi-gloss IMHO. I wonder if they ran out of the regular paint and in time-honored Ferrari fashion used what they had handy?
Interesting. What's your S/N? Maybe Luigi found a can of crinkle black in the supply room and other cars from the same time frame have it too! It looks good.
Mine had 20,000 original miles on the car when I bought it in 1978. Came with a crinkle finish which looks to be original. Car was built March 1972. Aloha, Mark
Correct that purchase date to 1998. The air filter canister is finished to match as well. Heres a photo Aloha, Mark Image Unavailable, Please Login
Mine (with crinkle) is a US car, built Nov 71. #2966. Could the factory have started with flat, switched to crinkle for a while, then returned to flat?
