I spent quite a bit of time back in the late 70's and early 80's behind the wheel of various racecars, at tracks, and general horseplay. Most of it is not Fcar related. But if you want I'll post some, let me know. A couple of examples... An old Lola of mine and a shot at Elkhart Lake, Road America now. 1979?1980? Somewhere in there. . Does anyone have the S/N at Sebring on 1958. It's Perez de la Mesa and Bolanos who did not start. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I found this on internet : "Cuban rebels kidnapped him on February 23, 1958, but he was later released, and remained a good friend of his captors afterwards." Is it true ? Personally I doubt about friendship !
It's difficult for people nowadays to understand just what respect Fangio was held in by everybody, not just fellow racers - the kidnappers were polite and Fangio was fatalistic about missing the race (ihe always said afterwards that fate protected him because there was a bad accident in the race in which he might well have been involved ), and he did indeed remain friendly with the kidnappers in later years. I proudly own one of a set of 4 original watches that Maserati produced for their 1957-team drivers Fangio, Behra, Moss & Schell. I have the one that was given to Behra. A friend of mine ownes the Schell-watch. Moss still has his one. No idea what happened to the one that was given to Fangio. All watches are stamped and numbered on the reverse. I got that confimed by the factory. Ciao! Walter
...will do! Currently the watch gets a major overhaul (...I had it on under the shower $%XxxX!!2&//!!!). Ciao! Walter
