That year I hit the jackpot and talked my way into press credentials. Full access to the pits etc. One of the happiest days in my life. how ugly that era was, the Theodore and Toleman were worst, the Osella not too hot. Good shots of my Ensign, but you missed me! following year I went to ATS after a LeMans gig. Thanks for the pics.
Bowbells came to conquer the "Max" thread, and did! Great pics from 81, remember that being the pst skirt year, the Ensign actually was as fast without the skirts! Made preparation a lot easier too. We had a full time "skirt" guy previously keeping those things from suddenly sticking mid-corner.
Actually on reflection, over the years I have been amazingly close to a few villains.... Mr E (allegedly involved in various east london shenannigans) Nick Whiting (Charlie's Brother) gangland murder Tony Dean (cigar imports) Mike Tyrrell (powder substance imports) Don Whittington (see above) Paul Jr. (ditto) not to say that any of them are bad/guilty (except as found in court), my dealings with all were very pleasant. brian.S
Just as this thread was slowing down Brian and now Andreas come along and jump start it with great photos!!
No worries: Once I'm done with my F1 pics, I'll start digging out all the pics of racecars from that era. Many of them can be seen nowadays racing in historic leagues. I'll use some photo shop on them to make them look 'weathered' and you won't know the difference.
No worries. ?. Are you an antipodean Anton? Every Aussie/Kiwi I've known has had that in his vocab. I love that shot in your profile, is that Germany or Austria? Got a couple of Austria stories for non-family forums...... Looking forward to seeing the other shots. I have some slides to scan somehow as well as some off track
Swiss by birth, American by choice. Switzerland, about 20 years ago. A Swiss/Canadian airline pilot bought this "Horlacher egg", which is based on a stretched Kawasaki. Two seats behind each other. Riding in it was very unique, felt more like flying very low in a jet. At low speeds the support wheels would come out automatically.
F1 needs a James Hunt today. I thought, actually I hoped, that Kimi would step up after the strip show in London, but now that he is married..........................boring.
I knew bow wouldn't be gone for long, he really hated the "Max' thread and no doubt a few technical ones too. But, like me, our roots are from these years of this thread, hopefully a few "background" pics can help along with the car ones, I know I have a few from the plane back from Japan with the Mclaren team and James. for certain there are a lot more photographs to see this way beyond 1000. Thanks Ron for doing this and all for their contributions.
Wasn't so long ago that I heard his marriage is on shaky ground because party boy likes different company. There is hope. And yes, I do miss Eddie Irvine.
Great shots once again. Notes to myself of nothing in particular.. 1) Jabouille still hanging with Ligier after his retirement from racing mid season 2) Is that Jarier in between the Osella photos? Bruno? Rebaque? Don't recognize half these gents. Caught Murray, Daly and Salazar... 3) Four tire suppliers at the time, none of whom were Conti. 4) All four singleton teams made it into the field 5) Mr. Barrett sponsoring the oddly schnozzed Theo without the benefit of Mr. Jackson 6) Can't remember seeing a JP Lotus, always thought they were JPS 7) Edward C. finishing 5th while teammate and future Ferrari No.1 DNQ BTW, Surer has very kind remarks about his time with Ensign, the team who gave him his best finish in F1. (4th, Brazil, 1981)
Dingdingding! Yes to Jarier, Giacomelli and Hector. You're good. Of course I always had a soft spot for Surer. It's funny that he did better in the Ensign than in the Brabham. But that was Marc.
Here's the photo I was alluding to. This is scanned from an enlarged (and framed) print, so the quality is not the greatest: Image Unavailable, Please Login
I posted these on another thread then came across this one today. I spent quite a bit of time back in the late 70's and early 80's behind the wheel of various racecars, at tracks, and general horseplay. Most of it is not Fcar related. But if you want I'll post some, let me know. A couple of examples... An old Lola of mine and a shot driving at Elkhart Lake (Road America). 1979? 1980? 1981? Somewhere in there .
