Last 10 of 12 hybrid cars I've passed (none have passed me BTW) had male drivers with facial hair. One of the two without a beard I'm not real sure it was a man or not, but if so, I can proclaim that 83% of all male hybrid owners have beards.

And no, I was not scoping them out, I just noticed a trend when I passed my neighbor in one so I started conducting this survey.

Is it a conspiracy that "big oil" is behind, of something even more sinister? Move-On related?

Mixed looks really. Younger set looks kind of defiant, the unkept Uni-bomber look. The older guys might be equally at home with a tweed cap and jacket with leather elbow patches.

    Yeah,
I posted that link back when William H was going off on the Prius guys. Then we all registered there, that was fun for a few days but it quickly lost it's luster!

Well, the other day I saw a "murdered" out Prius. Black, tinted tails, back wheels, tinted windows. It looked pretty funny. Couldn't see the driver though.

I have noticed something about them, they ALL drive in the left lane on the highway! On my way to the airport in the morning I always pass three or four of them blocking the left lane like it is their job. That is the conspiracy. Haters.

Yep, mine also. Oh, and I do have a goatee, I'm 49 and I am not a liberal. I just got tired of $500/mo fuel bills for my daily driver.

That's what the ole chrome horn is for.

A friend of mine just got one and he is a husky guy like me, and the mental image of him climbing into and out of that car makes me think of clowns piling out of a clown car VW bug at the circus. I do find the technology really interesting but I'm put off by the majority of their holier-than-thou owners who have no idea what the long term impacts to the environment will be when the Priuses start to hit 100k miles and the heavy metals in the battery system have to be disposed of.

Uhh, the batteries are recyclable. I dislike the image of the "typical" Prius owner also and let's face it the car is FUGLY but when gas is $6+ per gallon at the end of this year, a hybrid will really make even more sense. I'm hoping that at the end of my lease in 4 years there will be many more options available that aren't visually like the Prius.

You need to go do some more reading... about how the batteries are constructed in the first place...

I'm not opposed to the idea of an economical hybrid. Just kind of poking fun at the millitant environmental owners who would drive an agenda if it had wheels. Of course there are decent guys and girls who have one for their OWN personel needs. Then there are those who drive one believing I should be too.

Now, I drive between 900-1500 miles a week, and my gas bill would buy a nice little house in this area. The difference between 24 mpg and 50 would be huge to me. I like the new Chevy Malibu hybrid, but 31 mpg doesn't justify the switch to me. Plus it looks like a car, not like I'm making some statement. My 64 MGB gets that 31.5 (if I nurse it) and is a blast to drive, and cost what a belt job on a Ferrari cost. That makes it a good summer errand car, but not real practical for everyday use. Get the Malibu up to the 40+ range and I'd love to have one.

I was driving to the dealership to pick up my car and passed a Prius on the way. Glanced over and I started laughing so hard. The guy was in his 50's, looked dirty(smelly), and had a beard. I immediately thought of this thread.

Oh, and of course he had the whole "Vote Obama", "Impeach Republican", etc etc bumper stickers on his car. WTF is the deal with tree huggers and bumper stickers? They love to plaster those things all over the back.

One of those smug d-bags honked at me because I had the gall to pass his Priass while he was doing a comfortable 16 mph.

What is bugging me about this whole concept is how the technology gives you much of anything in steady speed highway driving - and that is where I see them. Like previous posters said, taking up passing lane space on the freeway.

It would make sense, I guess, in stop & go, where you could recover some energy on each stop, and the electric motor lets the gas engine stop at lights. I read in a railroad magazine that the locomotive manufacturers have created hybrid switch engines - which really did reduce fuel consumption because of the nature of their use. They have (up to now at least) not felt it was really of much benefit for over the road locomotives.

My other problem with Prius et al is this - if they can only get about 34 MPG or so, I would probably just keep using my 28 MPG Porsche 993 because of obvious reasons. At least with the present gas prices. One of the guys here at work had one of those very first Honda two seaters - the one with the tiny rear wheels closer together than the fronts...he told me it pretty much disappointed him with the actual MPG returned.

And, yes - for the record - he did fit the baggy-wrinkle professor profile.

I have been driving mine with or faster than the flow of traffic (75-85) and have been averaging 38-40mpg. Yes, I might get another 5-7mpg by slowing down but I am perpetually late! The car has more than enough power to stay up with traffic if the driver wants to use it. I took the car up into the mountains this weekend on a road where my euro 308 QV and my wife's '07 Cooper S really shine. The Prius did just fine IMO. It was actually very stable and poised in the curves even with the stock tires. No, it's not pretty and it's not a sports car BUT it's going to save me over $500/month from what I was driving before so I can live with it. Hmm, $500 x 12 months = 308 major service with lots of $ left over for potential surprises! :D
