I'd say that 3k isn't enough. I've been building a 1/24 PF coupe for some time now, haven't counted hours, but i'd say more than 100 for the body only (not even ready yet), and for PF coupe i could use some existing kits as a base. When all parts are done, the final build will take atleast another 30 hours, or a lot more, depending on detail level.

For 365 GT 2+2 there is not much to begin with in 1/24 scale, so everything really needs to be scratchbuilt.

.. at a minimum I'd say. The price would also depend on the level of detail. If you want opening doors, bonnet etc, detailed engine etc then be prepared to go 10x that amount. Also, if you're having it scratch built then why not go at least 1:18 and maybe even 1:12 scale?

It is the sort of work I could do, but any professional will base the cost on either a totally unique one off, or offset the development cost with a small production run and reduce the cost based on an instinct for repeat sales.

So the first customer supplies the seed funding to get things up and running but only pays a proportion of the overall price. But I'd say in this instance it would be up to the first customer to canvas other owners and get some firm syndicate orders because the cost of a one only model would be very, very high. And although the car is a nice Ferrari, I'm afraid it doesn't have the cache of some of the more sporty or road/race models for a builder to want the pressure of selling the remainder to recoup costs.

There are perhaps better options for a highly detailed model in 43rd scale from an already existing kit, but in 24th or 18th a master pattern maker would I imagine charge upwards of £3000+ just for some basic originals, not to mention making moulds, casting, photo etching, and building the final model.

Thanks for the comments guys. I join in when I can because this is a darned good forum, and in 'Collectables' I see a lot of quality models and read posts from genuinely enthusiastic collectors. So I can't guarantee it, but if there is anything I can help with I'd rather spend my time here than some other forums.

I had no idea that the cost of a scratch built would run that high. I thought a few hundred dollars would be more like it. Is there anyone out there that could built anything in that price range ?

The models that cost a few hundred dollars are usually based on a kit that has already been mass produced or at least semi mass produced in resin form from a smaller model company and then the modeler will add certain scratchbuilt parts for detail. I searched a little bit and didn't find any kits of the car your looking for so unfortunately I think you'll be paying around what everyone has been saying if you want to see it in model form.

The world of scratchbuilt models like the modells from Barnett or for instance Suber is very selective.
Collecting on that level is a serious matter, and takes serious money, similar to collecting watches and stamps.

People like Jon Shirley are besides their collection in 1:1 ferrari's very passionate collectors of smaller cars.
Marshall Buck made him a 1:10 modell of 375MM 0402AM which is just as stunning as the real car!

At the moment the Legenda et Passione auction in Maranello features some very special models with estimates of over $5000,- each (without 20% buyers fee)

But lets not discuss values, just enjoy Steve's site and hope I will ever get one....

So are those kits all scratch built? Or are they pieced together and just super detailed to perfection?

On that level you are more like an art-collector than a collector of miniature cars. So in that sense, these prices are fairly low compared to other high quality sculptures.

Models that are custom made from an existing kit are expensive as well. Most of the work out there is exactly that and still demand prices in the thousands. Scratch built models in a large scale run tens of thousands.Time is money ;)

Go for a "curbside" 1/43 made to your specifications. Then you are getting in the ballpark of a few hundred dollars.
