1983 308 GTS QVsi, 33k miles, original white repainted white but the paint job is just 'ok', rough black interior that needs some help, dash overlay glued and poorly done, windows don't work, gas guage doesn't work, State inspection out of date by 2 years, owners says A/C converted to R134 and major service just done by a non-ferrari mechanic and can produce no receipts...wants $40,900 for the car and can't understand why it won't sell. Rather then run away I told him the car was worth (maybe) $24k 'as is' IF someone trusts that the major was done and done correctly right AND was willing to redo the interior AND take the chance on everything else. Was I fair on price?

It's worth what he can get for it, but if it were me, I would have to assume that the major hasn't been done.

    $6K major
    $3k interior repair
$3K penalty for bad paint (more if you wanted it painted)
$2K penalty for off color (sorry but white is not a desirable color on a 308 to most people)
    $2K misc repairs
    ------------
$16K is what it needs to be nice.

A nice QV is $40K. Subtract $16K and you have $24K....exactly what you said, so I agree. Except for that price I am factoring in a major.

Birdman, couldn't agree more that its worth whatever someone will pay. With that said I have first hand experience on a 328 that I love now but it was very costly to get it there! Getting these cars back to good condition can be really expensive. Plus, I am not really sold on a white car even though I think some Ferraris are beautiful in white. Thanks.

    I agree $24K

He is going to sit on that thing for a very long time wanting 40. I don't even think an idiot would pay 40 for that car as is.

He said he was going to put it on EBay. I'll give everyone a heads-up on the car if I see it so that they at least have the full story. It is a classic case of a guy thinking his car is worth what he wants it to be worth rather than what the market says it is worth. Telling a guy is car is worth far less than what he thinks it is worth is kind of like telling him his daughter is ugly...the conversation goes downhill from there. Just wanted to make sure I didn't insult him. I think I know Ferraris pretty well given I have a number of them. I certainly know what it costs to service, maintain and recondition these cars and it ain't pretty when you overpay at the front end!

Did you notice its a sammy with TRX? The AC was recently done by an AC shop.we have these shops in Austin,AC only, cold, they left the alt loose and I went over and took care of it for lunch @ Top Notch.AC is cold, interior is nice, paint job is OK,deep dish spoiler,I installed it,major done by Dale, one of the best,Alfa Factory trained,20+yrs,a top wrench in ATx. Yes, needs detail and 1 little problem taken care of.Why would you want this Car if you have a number of other Cars? Cause white is so HOT on 6th street @ midnight.

I'm am interested in the car at a fair price. The owner thinks its worth nearly twice what it is worth. I am simply checking with fellow Ferrarists to make sure I am not the one being unreasonable. My intention was not to insult the guy and aparently he was insulted by my offer. I have simply stated the facts of what I saw when I looked at the car. I would doubt there is a receipt for the major but if there is that is a good thing. I agree that Dale is a very good Alfa mechanic. But most Ferrarists want their majors done by certified Ferrari mechanics. Otherwise, any reasonable person should assume that the major still needs to be done. A/C work done by some A/C shop tells me other non-Ferrari-experienced mechanics have been working on the car too. Not always a bad thing but it can affect the value of the car. The interior was rough - dirty, drivers seat showed much cracking and very, rubbed, very cheap overlay glued on dash, removable top pieces coming unglued, etc. Fuel gage, radio, windows don't work which leads me to believe at minimun there is an electrical problem and wonder what else doesn't work. Inspection sticker is out of date by I think 2+ years. I did not open the engine bay to check that but I would guess at best it is very, very dirty. White color, I agree is it different but I wouldn't say it is hot.

Look, I am not trying to disparage the guys car. I'm simply trying to confirm that the price I offered is reasonable and in line with what someone who knows these cars would offer. The two comments above from very experienced owners on this site confirm my thoughts. There may in fact be someone out there willing to pay more. If so, more power to the seller. But I personally hate to have more invested in a car than it is reasonably worth at least from the get-go.

The car is worth $24k in my opinion.

And what's a "sammy with TRX?"

If it has TRX wheels, that is another disadvantage.

I agree. But the wheels on the car I look at were original to the car. That is why I am confused by the sammy / TRX comment.

Something is not making sense here -- One guy says that the car had a major done by Dale, yet the owner is unable to produce any receipts for the work. He also claims that AC work was done by a local AC shop, but again apparently the owner is unable to produce any receipts. That would certainly raise a question in my mind whether the claimed work was actually done.

It would not bother me if a "non-Ferrari trained" mechanic did the major, provided he had a good reputation and was skilled with European cars, and had experience working on Ferraris. Despite what some people here think, Ferraris are not that unique that a good skilled mechanic can't do the work. But I would want to confirm that the work was done, the parts were actually purchased and put on the car, and that everything was done right. That would include talking to the mechanic. But with no receipts, it's hard to confirm what was actually done.

Working from the assumption that the work was not done, or would need to be redone to confirm it was done properly, the $24K number sounds ball park. The electrical stuff could be a blown fuse or fuse block problem that can be cured easily. Or window switch/gummed up motor problem, but also not insurmountable.

Bottom line, how much do you want the car?

Your offer is fair. Here's a little "off the beaten path" info I can pass along. First, I bought my '84 knowing it had a good service record for the major services, but it had a long list of items that needed attention. Many of the leaks, squeaks, rattles, switches, etc. were fixed simply by driving the car on a regular basis, or were fixed in the process of working on other parts and simply putting things back together properly. That's not to say that I didn't have to spend any money, but the QVs are great, reliable cars that work well when given some basic maintenance. A black interior is also easier to repair/match/restore than other colors.

As for the color, my non-red Ferrari looks great and gets lots of attention. There are those people that only like red, and then there are those people that go out of their way to tell you your car looks really cool. And remember, picking a color for a Ferrari is like a choosing a Victoria's Secret model; I may have my favorite, but they'd all do nicely...

Let me know if you get it, I'll offer any advice I can.

Thanks for the definitions. Yes, I recall him saying that the tires were very hard to get, expensive and did not perform well when it was at all wet.

Cause you aint ever gonna get that white Car for $24.You should go see Rodger and get a boxster, or an old 9 a lemon. If you must have a Car and can cough up $40 there are quite a few choices on ebay and at dealers. The owner of the white car is very truthfull and your not,its a pretty good Car and your assesment is amateurish and adolesent, you are a quintessential tire kicker and the boxster is perfect for you.Have you looked at the infinity? Z car? they are sure to have clean carpets.

Just to clarify, I don't know that they seller cannot produce receipts. What I do know is that Dale works on Alfa cars on the side and not as a business and therefore I would guess that there may not be receipts. If the seller can produce the receipts it is a plus and some will find some additional confort in it. I think that the best thing to do is have a PPI done by a reliable shop known for its work on Ferraris. If I were the seller I might invest in having a PPI done by one now and offer its with the car as additional comfort. I think it might add to the value of the car and increase the interest of potentital buyers.

Thanks for your offer of advice JazzyJay. This is a great site for sharing the provence of these cars. I just really felt bad about insulting the guy with my offer. I know comments about cars for sale from other Ferrarists have saved my bacon a few times. By the way, I think non-red Ferraris are beatuful and I really like your analogy to Victoria Secret models...how true!

Pretty good car? It better be a lot more than pretty good for $41k being that it's white and has questionable/undocumented maintenance. For some reason, this spring there is a big disconnect between asking prices and actual values on a lot of the 1980s Ferraris. GT4's asking $40k...driver gtsi's with asking prices in the high $30ks....mondial qv cabs with asking prices over $40k. All great cars, but some sellers have serious wishful thinking.

Amen to that! I agree, at $40k it better be very good. At $24k it might take the $16k as Birdman suggests above to get it there.

Realistically $24K is low. I don't think QVs change hands in the low to mid 20s unless they don't run. It should bring more than $24K on Ebay. There are guys on here who say some 308s are only worth $15K. That is BS. IME I know of only 2 308s that sold for $15K that ran without extensive body damage and that was years and years ago.

This Car is pretty good and has been looked after by old school italian wrenches for going on 10yrs.The owner is not a "car" guy and "whitey" needs a good detail, especially the motor. The owner is out of the country half the time and so it sits.I like the interior a lot and have put lots of miles on this one.It had a major just before he got it 10yrs ago and another one a couple yrs back. Its nice and strait, doors close well, panel fit good. The original paint was nice but a "Ferrari Salesmen, ugh," convinced him to have it resprayed.I paint Cars and this is a decent job.It has new 134AC compressor, and expansion valve and works well. The MC and booster and rear calipers were done by Whitehorse and a couple yrs ago we sent that pesky pass rear caliper back for warranty. It got new rear rotors and I got him a new set of TRX in 05,almost no miles on em.I put a new rack and pinion+ tie rods on for the previous owner. The white looks great on hot summer nights crusin downtown. To put pretty good in context my Car is euro84,17000 mile minty and quick,H00kem has misrepresented this Car but he sounds pretty rookie,$24,000 is a stupid offer and $41,000 is probably also, but you insulted me with your cockamamie story so thats why the porky comments, pissed me off a little bit there telling the world my customers Car is garbage. On the other hand,Im a salty old rancher and think all sammies are garbage and would never go even $24,000 for a great one.

Uh huh. So you are telling him he is insulting your customer to offer $24K but you are admitting that you wouldn't pay $24K for it.

    ???

BTW, my assessment is based on what the car was described as in the opening post. I have never seen the car. If the assessment is wrong, so is my estimate.

White does not appeal to me in any car, especially a Ferrari, just my opinion. Others love it. I didn't however say it needed to be red. I think on average most people are not big fans of white Ferraris and the car would get a higher price if it were virtually any other color (in order: red, black, yellow, blue).

Maybe the car is worth more than $24K as it is a QV, but if you are really interested in a red one with a good service history, you would have to get this one pretty cheap to settle on a color you don't want and a car that needs work.

Just my $.02. Leave it to someone who wants a white one and and keep looking.
