This started in the pit at the track 2 weeks ago. I returned to the pit at the end of the day, and noticed this Clacking noise from the rear of the car. I thought it was a stone traped under the bottom tray somewhere. Today I decided to have a look at it on the lift, and its NOT just a stone cought under the bottom cover..

The sound is from the engine somewhere, but I cant tell ecxatly where. It is equally loud from under the car, and above. The sound is a RANDOM Tapping/Clacking noise, and its pretty loud! Its 90´ 348 tb.
I have have done the ear/screwdriver test on all parts from above and under the car, but I simply cant tell where its from. Alltough its seems louder when I put the screm driver to the Oil preasure switch next to the oil filter, put not that much.

The car runs greater than ever. Pulls hard from idle to rev limit in all gears, idles great, no miss fires, Oil presure is fine, oil/water temps perfect.
The sounds is unaffectet by cold/hot engine
Its completly random and dosent follow the rpms perfectly
Sometimes is will go away for 10 sec or so, and then come back
Can best be described as a hard/loud metallic Tapping/Clacking noise

Hope somebody have an idea where to start here. Im lost right now. So counting on you guys for a brainstorm on possible things to check.

Sorry to hear about this. I wonder if perhaps your oil pump chain/tensioner has come adrift. Not easy to fix. There is a thread here from a few months ago (?) about this occuring.

Strickly My Opinion, but I have had experience with this .

This sounds like the Oil Drive bearing,

Technical Service Bulletin No. 10-34 Date 11/03/92

    Affected units 348 TS/TB and Mondial T with Chassis # below 91500

Do not run the car it will progressively get worse, have a mechanic check it out to be sure, engine out service to repair.

    great with some ideas!

If it was a oil pump chain or bearing problem, wouldent I see that on my oil press. gauge?

I have a Major comming up soon, but guess that could be right now insead...

Thanks, yes, this sound just like my problem....

What would cause this "rock in a can" sound? Is is the chain, with out the tensioner banging around because its too loose?

I did not see any change in oil pressure, right away, everything looked fine just made that horrible noise, "rock in a can" like you said. coming from the front lower center of the motor. But shortly afterwards all went to hell. Bearing let go.

but this would only make a noise when the fans are running right... My sound is allmost for sure from the engine itself...

    I have stoped driving mine.

Is there a easy way to determine/look if it indeed is my chain/tensioner?

Some people on this forum have described the flywheel going dry in exactly the same way - rock in a can. But I think that is easily checked by listening at the rear of the car while a friend shuts off the engine. See NoDoubt's primer, pre-purchase section, if you think it might be the flywheel.

This is true, my car makes this noise because the flywheel was modified and is dry.... but you can easily tell if the sound is coming from the pumpkin or the engine, and if its the flywheel, it will usually only be heard if the clutch is engaged.

Ouch, sounds awfully familiar - the random noise is the oil pump chain banging around against your broken tensioner, it is not the flywheel. It sounds just like loose rocks in a coffee can, the car drive normal and it is random. I would NOT run the car anymore as it could spell trouble for the oil unions that spay oil under the piston. Three of the four were broken on my car and they are each $275 IF you can find them. Ferrari Italy were out when I went looking. Dan Pass has at least one left. The whole fix is going to be very expensive because it requires an engine and partial disassembly. Are you DYI or take to mechanic? IF the oil unions are broken the mechanic is probably going to pull the crank which means gearbox etc...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. If you are DYI, I have a couple of tricks that may help along the way but the whole thing is not for your average mechanic, this is beyond replacing belts you need patience and the right tools

    Keep us posted

BTW, you will not see any fluctuation on the oil pressure, and the bearing will likely be in OK shape. As a point of clarification, my car did have the service bulletin completed with the "new" bearing, what failed was the tensioner which is a cheap ($750) pressed metal part that has a couple of tack welds to keep the delrin runner (or whatever it is) in place.

To add insult to injury, the replacement shoulder bolt that holds the tensioner in place galled up the soft aluminum threads - I tried to back out and it sheared. Fortunately Daniel had a spare ($92 yikes) which was made of hardened steel as opposed to machined mild steel, one helicoil and I was back in business.

The car runs great now (even the CEL is out), a lot of work though!
    Good luck

ok, sounds like we have found the problem. Now next quest.

How can I be sure that its the tensioner, is there a away to take a look in there? removing the sump bottom cover?

IF there is nothing else wrong in there, how would be parts list look like to fix this?

Can't really be sure, although if it broke (almost certain) parts may be in the sump. As you noted pull the sump it is quite easy you can do it in situ (if I am not mistaken) then you can pull the engine out and order the parts! see thread the Nightlife posted. Ricambi has the parts list ready as a package - as always they have the best service :)

    Lars -

Check your email. Just sent a detailed parts breakdown. We simply need to get the engine number from your block to verify the bearing size and lower driven gear.

Do not listen to a thing Wade has to say. His "experience" with this was on my car. It cost me $16,000 of which he covered nothing. I might add that the failure occured right after I purchased my car from Wade which was represented as a perfect car. Food for thought.

"right after" hmmm purchase date 11/17/05 bearing failure date 1/27/06 and 1000 miles and you bought a 16 year old car that "was" in excellent condition.

No one knows when these bearings are going to fail, the TSB on your car should have been done years earlier to prevent it from happening at all, but it wasn't, no fault of mine. I tried to stand behind it and offered to fix at cost but you refused. What more could I have done. You act like I intentionally broke your car, I sold it to you, I dyed the seats, installed the cats, and changed a light bulb, that is IT I never put wrench one on your engine, how you can continually insinuate that I had any direct involvement with a bearing inside your engine failing is insane. I am really surprised that more has not broken on your car, the evidence on Fchat alone of your driving style would push any car to a breaking point.

I will not respond to anymore of your ridiculous attacks, you have beaten this into the ground for 2+ years, get a life...
