Hmm, Europe is actually very, very expensive. Ok, you can do Eastern Europe... but what will that bring you? Ok, you gonna drink a lot of good beer and smoke lot's of dope with some trust fund wannabe bohemians. Then what? I would say Asia is better and much, much cheaper, but you run the risk of some biblical diarrhea in India, some bad yabaa in Cambodia or "ladies" who turn out anything but in Pataya. Then again... except for some cool stories to tell you buddies, you probbaly won't learn anything usefull.

I'd would concur on getting some usefull degree in the US.

I don't do drugs and I don't drink beer. And these days, outside of the occasional glass of wine, I don't drink, period. Part of the idea of this trip - since right now, it's just an idea - is to reacquaint myself with my bearings, and effect some sort of change that will allow me to figure out what to do next. The professional decisions I've been making as of late haven't been the soundest; so it's time to reevaluate.

And you going to that by going backpacking? Seriously, it might work if you have a much more precise plan... Say bum around Tuscan towns learning Renaissance art, or plan to visit every great Cathedral or every great Hindu Shrine in the world or work for Oxfam in some impoverished African village or plan to shag as many naive nubile packpaker chicks in youth hostels... or try to seek enlightment throgh some Indian guru or two.

Simply heading to Europe, will have you blow through your money and gaining nothing.

Another thing; don't fall for the over-romanticized notion of bumming around Europe. It is not all it is cracked up to be. A vagrant is a vagrant no matter the location. After a while of no hot showers or good meals, you'll look back at an overpriced NY apartment and think, it is totally justifiable.

Best advice is to have a plan and stick to it.

The folks with whom Carbon is supposed to have a problem are notably absent from this thread.

That's because they understand that these issues with Carbon are personal, and don't need to be aired here, unlike some of the folks who continue to post their version of those purported events. It's also that they no this thread will not resolve those issues.

I asked that we stick to Cabon's question simply for that reason. No one here knows EXACTLY what the issues are except Carbon and those folks DIRECTLY involved with him. Anything else is speculation, guesswork or simply second hand information.

Imagine for a moment that someone here "heard something" about you. From someome else, who got it from the guy who says he knows the guy who heard it "straight from the horse's mouth" Then that gets posted, passed around, reposted, PMed, emailed, and generally bandied about as if it WAS FACT. It's not. It is conjecture, exageration, innuendo and a giant game of wisper down the lane. It does nothing to resolve anything, except maybe to spread a little dirt around the playpen.

I think we all agree, including Carbon, that he's made some errors in the past. It's up to him, and the folks he made those errors with, to resolve those issues. NOT US. If they are as serious as some contend, there are legal avenues that could be pursued. Carbon's not hiding, he's right here. So, let's leave that to them.

THAT WAS WHAT I WAS ASKING FOR. Nothing more or less. But we can't seem to do that. Which to me is as much an indication of our character here as it is Carbon's.

Now, having said all that, if you folks want to turn this into a Carbon Bash a Thon. Well, that would be up to you, wouldn't it.

I just got back from Europe , everything is so expensive. Best to get a rail pass. and make a plan. Maybe this can help.

It will give you an idea of some low cost palces to stay, when you need that shower and a bed.

    You only go around once.

    Expensive! So what?

I think it would be a great experience.

Just to be clear, I have spoken personally to three of the people Dan has wronged. It is they that I ever post about "obligations." I do not post like that based upon rumor or innuendo.

As for the OP's question, I am of the same mind as the majority here. If you are really broke, how are you going to help yourself in Europe? The open ended ticket will cost you over $1k, euro rail and other things you KNOW you will be shelling out for will be just as expensive there as here, with no guarantee that anyone will help you esp as you will have no clue what they are saying.

Need to reassess your state of mind? Go to the Grand Canyon and back pack that. Or yellowstone. You speak the language there.

Yup, the best advice. Get a job. Get an education to get a better job.

Then you can afford to vacation properly.

NNO, have you looked into Nursing Assistant and Radiologist jobs? They pay well, and can be done quickly via a variety of night schools. You have a GED, right?

Sorry, everyone, forget I asked. I just wanted some opinions on a simple topic without all the nonsense. I'll keep my posts relevant to Ferrari-related topics from now on.

I would vote for hiking the Appalachian trail. If you get tired of it, you are not far from familiar territory to get something going. Europe is unattractively expensive today, so I would search for life's meaning elsewhere. The eastern US mountains are a great place for introspection, and there are probably a group of people that would be as influential for getting a good perspective on life walking those trails as anywhere else. Challenge yourself and see what happens.
Or go to school. Sounds like your heart isn't in it there, so I would do something else for maybe a year or so.
    Good luck,
    BT

I tend to agree with this, but I am pretty conservative by nature.

I think it might be a good experience and if you don't do it now, when will you get the opportunity again?

You have two points. Travel and employment.

You don't want a used car because of low funds and high prices for fuel but you can go on vacation for how many weeks?

If you can afford the trip and expenses, it should be fun. I can't imagine looking for work would be expensive even for head hunters that charge.

My advice is to look for work and take the trip in a year or two when you have stable employment, more cash and the US dollar climbs its sorry ass out of the toilet.

By hey I'm terrible with my own finances, I just bought into something called the "Roman Empire".

    Well said, Darth.

Those who have been wronged can personally speak up. It is telling that they choose not to.

When others take up the torch and only allude to these incidents, it is innuendo, and scoring points at someone else's expense. There is no need for any public lynchings.

If you want to warn others about a character on-line, please be respectful and discreet, and let's hope that your friends have as much sense as you and don't really need the anti-sucker warnings. If they extend trust/hospitality to someone on the basis of some online posts/personality, then they are kinda asking to get reamed.

    Again, no public lynchings, please.

You must mean MANNHEIM. What the hell are you doing eating Greek food in Germany; go to Greece for that!

Of course though, the best Chinese restaurant in the world is in Palma de Majorca!
