My first impression is the car has more than 16K miles on it. I would list the big items on the $25K receipt. When was the last time the timing belts and tensioner bearings were changed. Does the a/c work? Why was the rack replaced with only 16K miles on it? I didn't rebuild my rack until 100K miles. I had the original clutch on one of my QVs with over 30K miles on it. 16K seems short for a clutch.
Low mileage...if it's for real is a plus. It's not "original" but nice and clean. Interior indicates higher mileage [to me at least]. It says 81 for the year but the tag on the door shows 1980. Service just done so w/receipts I'd say 26-28K. They did the rack and clutch...sounds pre mature for such a "low mileage" car It is a 2V car, not a QV so like myself you will own the slower of the series...but that can be fixed, and the Tubi is a good start. Get a PPI and if it checks out...go for it. It's a good entry level car and if you are a DIY person you can do a lot your self. BTW...I don't see any engine pics...did I miss them ?...ask for some if not.
About the seats, to play devil's advocate vs. desire308, the creases and markings on them are fairly even all over; they could just be original, dried out, low mileage never-redyed seats. (?) The best way to get an idea of the car's true mileage and condition is the same as with any car: go there, inspect it closely in person, talk to the owner, examine the records carefully, and try to put the pieces together to paint a larger picture of the car. The seller claims to have photo documentation of the body and paint work; I'd look at those carefully, and raise an eyebrow if any shots or documentation is obviously missing.
I would have the service interval carefully too. A 1980/81 should have had far more than the 15k major done buy now based on the passage of time...what about the 30k and 60K? Whoever does the PPI will have an opinion on that. Receipts are a must; otherwise discount as if the work wasn't done. An interesting car but I'm more into original than tricked-out and this car looks a little tricked-out to me.
The interior wear could be consistent with the miles. Ferrari interiors wear not so well from that period. HOWEVER, those are QV seats. They are not the original seats for the 2-valve injector cars. That said, for 2 valve slow poke, she is pretty in the pics! Get some engine photos.
Have the sodium filled exhaust valves been replaced? This would always be a price factor for me in considering a 2v 308.
I agree that the lack of engine pics is a red-flag. They took 60 pictures, but none of the engine? Other things I noticed: rear QV wing-spoiler was not original to a 2V; antenna, shields, tubi and wheels are after-market; front bumper is euro style and not original; black paint on front slats is not original to a 2V (IIRC that started with the QV). None of these are big things if you like the car, and the seller made an effort to point out the bumper, wheels, tubi and repaint. It is a driver at best. Have it checked out. Yellow is a bit different in 308s, they tend to be slow to sell, but a buyer who is seeking Yellow will move quickly once you find him/her. My guess is $20k-$25k.
Mike, It looks like this guy is located in Neptune, NJ. If you are serious about the car, go take a look at it. You're in South Jersey. Best way to tell how good or bad the car really is. Looking at the pics, it looks like the interior is in pretty sad shape. Unless you look closely it could mean a lot of work, or just detailing. There are no pics of the engine, so that always raises issues for me. And obviously, you need to look at the underside of the car -- suspension, brakes, engine area, tranny, "tubi", etc. Best thing is to go with someone who knows the cars, if you don't feel comfortable doing a PPI yourself. Trust me, you'll save a ton of money knowing what the car really needs rather than buying yourself into a money-pit. Good luck with it. Steve
sounds like lipstick on a pig. Any Ferrari owner who has loving poured his hard earned time, energy and money into the heart of 'this baby' will show his hard work. Also the devil's in the details of the write up. Talks about it in alternating states through the short description. If it was mine and I was writing it for public consumption, I would write about my car and my car only. talks about it as one we got in: WOW, THIS IS DEFINITELY THE NICEST ONE WE HAVE EVER SEEN, then talks about it as his car: also i put the euro front bumber for that great euro look, i also have the then talks about it coming out of the owners collection and calls it this baby not my baby: THIS CAR IS RIGHT OUT OF THE OWNERS COLLECTION, NO EXPENSE WAS SPARED ON THIS BABY then needs to reaffirm the car was his AGAIN THIS IS MY PERSONAL CAR, IT IS PERFECT IN EVERYWAY, I RESTORED THE WHOLE CAR FROM TOP TO BOTTOM Just my opinion. May be 100% legit, but don't think I'd foot the airfare. Carpet appears to be lifting in the interior at the door frame too. Just one more b!+*h. Looks good from far though.
nice, but not more than $28k,thats just me I don't like the rims, the tail lights need to be switch, but thats a sign that they did paint it right by taking everything off rather than masking around everything but no big deal to swap them, but everyones right he's hiding the biggest important thing the engine compartment,do a ppi first b4 any bidding, don't be taken by the paint job
Actually, those seats ARE correct for a 2V injected car. Those seats were introduced in 1980 with the injected model and continued unchanged thru the QV series until 85.
Do you think the car in question might be this car? I email him for the vin#. Thanks for all the help u guys are awesome! http://www.ferrarichat.com/ferrariads/showproduct.php?product=461&cat=2
I thought that was your car. Is this your car or are you looking to buy it. Look at the picture of the gauges. The car is running but the oil pressure is very very low. Check that out also.
Nope. Look at the clock and oil temp gauges by the shifter. They are horizontal not vertical. Vertical = 1980 only
Michael is a used car Dealer,(michael's motorcars) he may drive the car, but it sounds like he bought it from a collector. I would go see the car. Call the NJ Ferrari Dealer and see if they can provide any information. Good luck
