Fantastic way to spend the weekend, lots of sunshine, terrific company, great food and drink, superb vintage automobiles . . . some of the best racing in a long while - these guys really put on a show with some extremely valuable automobiles.

It was great to see Duncan Dayton racing his vintage cars after seeing him in a body cast last year at the ALMS races.

BUT . . . what memory will I always have of the Grand Prix Historique of Monaco 10-11 Mai 2008 ? ? ? This one of Sir Stirling Moss driving in Serie C - Voitaures de Sport construites avant 1953 in car #7 - a 1950 Frazer Nash Le Mans Replica Mk1. Stirling won the Monaco GP in 1956 in a Maserati 250 F; 1960 in a Lotus 18 and also in 1961 in a Lotus 18. He will be 79 years young this September. Absolutely awesome.

Michael - if it wasn't very dark green than it was your favorite color!! You're just a babe!

Duncan Dayton did very well, aside from securing pole for one Serie, he scored wins in two Serie. Serie B - GP cars 1947-1960. He took first with #22 - a 1959 Lotus 16. The car was part of Team Lotus having piloted by Pete Lovely, Graham Hill, Innes Ireland and Alan Stacey. Second place was Joaquin Folch in his #20 - a 1959 Lotus 16, driven in the past by Innes Ireland and Graham Hill. Third was Tony Smith in the #23 1960 Ferrari 246. Phil Hill won Monza in 1960 with the Ferrari.

In Serie F - GP Formula 1 - 3 litres 1966-1974 he also placed first with #8 - a 1970 Brabham BT33. Australian Tim Schenken drove this car in 1971. Second was again Joaquin Folch in his #3 1974 McLaren M23. The McLaren had been driven by Emerson Fittipaldi, Jochen Mass, James Hunt and Gilles Villeneuve. Third was Count Manfredo Rossi Di Monterlera in the #10 1973 Brabham BT42/44. Carlos Reutemann drove this car - as I recall Manfredo is heir to Rossi - (as in Martini Racing).

    Great racing!

Serie G - GP Formule 1 - 3 litres 1975-1978 - no surprise on the winner >>> yes Roger had an F1 car <<< - a 1975 Penske PC3 driven by Paul Edwards of the US. He set a new record time of 1:34.019 and obviously took the top win with #28. It was driven by John Watson. Second place was a great car - 1977 Tyrrell P34 - the one with six wheels. #33 was driven by Mauro Pane. A fierce battle between the Penske and Tyrrell resulted in the Tyrrell swiping the wall pretty good and it just kept on going! It was driven by Jody Scheckter and Ronnie Peterson. Third went to Jean-Michael Martin in the #14 1977 Ensign N177.

Got to call it quits for now - check back tomorrow evening and I'll put some more photos on here.

Don't know the owner, but this is the Hesketh that went upside down at Casino.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycWmREml58w

Mclaren crashed in the tunnel after running wide into the barrier.

Never good to see either of these, but Mclaren driver appeared OK. Hesketh driver, arm injury.

yes it did - such a shame - Lord Hesketh and his F1 time is a most interesting story, besides I absolutely love his emblem - the teddy bear!!!

Also both sessions of the Parade Ferrari de Formule 1 were red-flagged; second session did resume....multiple ouches in the sessions. The car that was most intriguing to us was the 1952 Ascari F500.

Sammer - didn't stay - two weeks between Historics and F1. Salt Lake City ALMS this weekend; not too long away is LeMans.

Peter - here's your friend #5 Thomas Mittler in his Osca MT4.

What amazed me is how big the tv makes the Monaco circuit appear. Lowe's hairpin is quite small - I think Monaco would be a fantastic kart circuit. The hill out of Ste Devote is quite steep; the church at Ste Devote is very interesting; the tunnel is neat and our lap time was the pits - just over 2 hours - that was our walking time interspersed with sightseeing. Fascinated by Lady Moura - one of 100 largest yachts in the world - name is in 24k gold - do a google . . .very interesting!

We've seen some of the cars at other Ferrari events - the P3, Maseratis, and others. What I found most appealing were the F1 cars of teams that didn't last long! The Heskeths, the Wolf, Surtees, Brabham Alfa BT45B, Shadow DN5, Penske PC3's, Matra-Simca. The F 312's with the "bundle of snakes" exhaust makes quite an art piece!

Here's an array of photos. Enjoy

actually we are planning on '10. how accessible is the paddock area? Special pass needed? ticket prices compared to the F1 gp. how far in advance did you purchase your tickets. was it very crowded. sorry for the grilling. Thanx for the great photos. you've certainly wheted my appetite. it appears the historics are more fun than the f1gp.

We went into the paddock area after the race - I would assume there's some sort of ticket for access there. Pricing compared to F1 GP is WOW! ! ! We paid 40 GPB for the weekend and purchased them a few months ago - here's the link: http://www.justtickets.co.uk/monaco/monaco_historic.htm - just out of curosity, I looked up our seating area (we could sit anywhere in the grandstand - not confined to one little square foot or whatever) for the F1 race - Saturday and Sunday are 590 Euro ----- big difference, huh?? We stayed in Nice and took the train from the main station in Nice to Gare Monaco and just a short nice walk to "K". In walking the circuit, I think to see most is in K. You can see them go up the hill, the exit from the tunnel, see them between boats along the harbor, in front of stands, just past the swimming pool. . . . If you are on the top row you can turn around and watch the start!!! Another big thing is that the large screen tv. NO on the overcrowding, very nice - not sitting all squashed up on a row . . perhaps I could say a bit of a different crowd for the historics. YES, the historics are much more fun than the F1GP. In all the races, it was REAL racing - not a processional. These guys took their machines (many only ones still in existance) and put them through the mill and in the case of the Hesketh that flipped, you know parts are just not readily available. Another thing, the restaurants in Monaco appeared not to be over crowded - again very enjoyable. You won't be sorry if you go.

Glad you enjoyed the photos. Michael, yeah on the stalker ?!?!?

    Thanks guys,
    Carol

Thanks - yes it could be described as "heaven" and it's not too soon to start planning for the next Historics. We met our friends from Glasgow in Nice - they got a great deal from one of the European based airlines from Edinburg to Nice.

Yeah, well I met with the fellow who was IN the car that flipped after his physical therapy appointment last Monday afternoon at his new racetrack in New Jersey, USA www.njmp.com...

He's had numerous surgeries on both shoulders and will not be back in the car until at least October at the earliest. Not good. Not good that a friend of his couldn't wait and hit him, forcing him up in the air and over. That "friend" has had numerous incidents in the recent past.

Racing, any type of racing, can be dangerous...

Thank you for your work, Firemarshall. Your job is one of the most important ingredients in racing.

Thank to you for your infos. I just knew he had a broken shoulder because i've seen the doctors taking care of him just after the crash.
