wrapping 400i headers

I had the headers on my 308 double wrapped for 6 or 7 years with no hint of a problem. I unwrapped then only becasue I planned to replace the wrap before I got side tracked tryine to stuff athe 400 engine into the car.

There are a lot of horror stories out there about headers rotting away do to wrapping, but that is really only an issue with mild steel headers. The wrap material in the 308 OEM heat sheilds was much better at holding water than the wrap was. I like to paint the wrap with to make it look better.

 

Have them ceramic coated inside and out...it will shield the heat, give you better flow and look better than tape

I just replaced the headers on my 97.5 Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster with Quicksilver stainless steel headers. As recommend by George Evans of Evans Automotive, I had the headers Jet hot coated without the wrap. The jet hot coats the inside as well as the outside.

As I understand it, the header wrap traps the heat in header after it has already passed throught the steel. With the jet hot coating on the inside, it prevents some heat from getting to the steel.

Talk to Evans, he can guide you and can have your headers coated.

I have used heat wrap for years with no problems but only on SS headers. Getting heat out is a huge priority. Interesting thread

 

Are the headers made of SS? If so no need to ceramic coat them. SS does not transfer heat the way mild steel does. Usually don't need to wrap SS headers unless they are really in a confined area. Header wrap is the leading cause of failures with mild steel headers.
