Have you seen the new Ferrari listings on Ebay? 3 Enzo's, 5 F40's, 2 F50's a 250 swb

I've watched with great interest the amount of Ferrari's on sale on Ebay. In 2002 you might be lucky to have 30 cars for sale, mostly from privateers. Now on any given day 200 are listed. If it is ebay's marketing, or just more people trust the sale of vehicles over Ebay, thats a business 101 discussion for later. I have used the amount of Ferrari's on ebay as a rough economic indicator. Here is what is interesting. Besides the usual 430's and random Enzo, today I was searching out of curiosity, and was BLOWN away by not only the quality of vehicles, but the QUANTITY of $1 M + vehicles for sale today on Ebay.
Most are held by RM Auctions out of Europe. Either they got a hold of a collection, or multiple sellers in Europe are cashing in on the recent Euro advancement against the Dollar.
There is a 512 M, a A 250 SWB California, a 250 LWB, Enzo's MC12's, F50's, a 312 P etc.

Is this a random fluke, or a sign of the economic crisis at hand. And, anyone putting in any bids?

Afaik, RM uses Ebay as another method of bidding for the "real" auction this weekend in Maranello. It isn't a pure Ebay auction, but you can bid via Ebay, like if you joined the auction via phone.

 

No idea what he's talking about - the three Enzos are all red: 128799, in Champaign, Illinois; 134603, in Boynton Beach, Florida; and 133502, in Orlando, Florida.

To me the odd thing is the number of Porsche Carrera GTs: twelve on there right now, which is nearly one percent of the entire run. Look for the prices on those to finally start coming down soon.

lol, +1, it's interesting that they're using ebay now as another method of absentee bidding, never heard of that before.

 

More cars for sale than there are buyers = ?

The 3 latest Supercars you mention in your title are very difficult to sell at the prices that sellers want and so they are either remaining unsold, or, are being sold for less, and thats just the bottom line.

Im not sure the reason is purely economic, because I have a feeling it may also be an issue where in the last year or so pent-up demand has been greatly satisfied...

Also the Supercar set is not particularly unique and when collectors move toward older and rarer machinery (which is almost always what happens), 2 or 3 of them come available at time, meaning the market's Supercar Cup soon runneth over

When you look at the demographic of collectors and the staggering wealth amongst them, MANY can easily afford any or all of the Supercars, but clearly, not everyone who has the means wants them hence their softening values... that another factor.

I will say this: Id hate to have one of the aforementioned financed today! LOL.

OK, so RM auction is using a new vehicle "no pun intended" to sell for their clients. But, a cursory glance at this months Robb Report, shows multiple listings for exotics (and by that I mean, fewer than 399 built) cars with tag lines such as "Need to sell now" Must have $600,000, etc etc. Those collectors who can shell out for a 1939 Bugatti or 59TR certainly could care less about cyclical pricing of their collections. It doesnt matter to them when business looks good, but it is a possibility that if business isnt looking so great, that 59TR looks like a juicy steak to an underfed dog, and they will sell it. Where mere mortals fit in (my hand raised) how many of us watched the price of our 550's go from $150 to 90k. When it is time to sell, that money comes from somewhere, and nobody will argue that a 550, no matter how nice, rare or prestine will (550 Barchetta no exception) will outpace inflation. Too many made. Period. Even the f40, probably the most volatile in recent memory listed at $440,000 in 1987, it would still be a negative investment today had you held on from 1987 on. (im not talking about the fun in the meantime. Purely $$$ and cents, and that is priceless).

What I am finding is: As the world economy slows, there is a trickle up effect. If the guy selling his f430 is feeling the pinch, and given a long enough economic slump, the prices of the very top of the collectable car world should feel the pinch as well, even though generally, those with the means (they probably have less than 3% of their networth in their vehicles) can hold on for the long term. So if a collectible car does come to market, it will either not get its asking price, or sell for a substantial discount. Never underestimate consumer sentiment.

You should see my local Lamborghini dealer. Sales of the Murcie down from 12 a month to less than 2. Im not sure how the Ferrari dealership is hanging on. Like they would tell me anyway
