Looking for some help. I was driving my 83 BBi, going along at a steady 55 mph, and the engine just died. A few seconds later then it backfired. Coasted into a parking lot, and it fired right up and no other problems. This is the 3rd time in about 8 months this has happened, and I have driven it about 20 times. Always at lower speeds, when coasting or holding steady speed. Any help would be appreciated.

flame out! sounds like something that would happen in a U2 at 80,000ft - except for the parking lot...

can't add any input beyond guesses at this stage... but 'backfire' infers to me that fuel is still going into the system. I'd initially start a stem to stern ignition check. No doubt others can add better input - sorry.

    Good luck,
    Vince

It sounds like your Dinoplex ignition box is starting to go bad. They are very prone to failure.

My Boxer started doing the same thing you described and then the box totally died and the car would barely run and kept backfiring.

Replace it with an MSD igntion box and an MSD coil. Inexpensive and easy to find. The best deals I have seen on them is at Summit Racing.

If you want a built in rev limiter, then go with the MSD 6AL unit, but you will need to send it to the MSD factory to have it modified to work with a 12 cylinder engine. Last time I checked, they charge $35 to do that.

    Gary,

Thanks for the help. Is there a good way to "disguise" it so that it looks factory?

PermaTune sells Dinoplexs that are hollowed out and have modern electronics hidden inside, but
    I believe they cost $2,000+

My mechanic mounted the MSD unit on an aluminum plate and used the existing mounting studs that are on the firewall to attach it. He also added a male electrical connector to the MSD wires, so that the MSD plugs directly into the factory female wiring connector.

Clean and simple. The MSD unit can be unplugged and pulled out in a matter of minutes.

    I had the same problem.
Mine turned out to be a bad fuel pump.
Check the fuel pump fuses first.
I already had the MSD in my car when this happened.
