What opinions does everyone have of the Porshce 959 ? How is it as a drivers car ? Is it collectable and a sound investment ?
Define drivers car, It still is the most technologically advanced p cars to ever have been built. As a drivers car it has its faults, its complicated, it suffers from any of the faults that the 80's 911 range had, also parts are EXPENSIVE. If you can afford it its a masterpiece, but from what i know performance wise its about as equal to a 996 Turbo with the X50 package. But its like a gem its special in its own way.
Uuummm no.......the CGT easily takes that role for numerous reasons. To find out what a 959 is like........drive a 1990-1994 Porsche 964 C4 to experience the 4WD system.......then a 993TT for it is the closest thing to it technologically (althought the 4WD system is different) and performance wise, for 1/5 the price. Personally I like the car but would not put money in one at the current market prices. There are a lot better cars for a lot less money from Stuttgart.
I think its too expensive ( never really liked it ) but its as rare as a 288 GTO so i would think its a safe investment.
Well according to Porsche Magazine the 959 still has more advanced suspension and turbo components not to mention many other components.
If it were my money I'd be looking at an F40. When the 959 came state side it lost a lot of power and it really just doesn't perform to its dollar when you look at everything else available. I also don't think it aged very well it looks kind of cheap and boring to me atleast. And yes it would be a pretty sound investment but others come to mind that would be a lot wiser...
You say the 959 looks cheap, yet you say you'd be looking at an F40?? Wowza - have you SEEN these 2 cars side by side? I have NOT driven either, but I HAVE seen both within 4 feet of each other. Which one prefers is a matter of taste, but the 959 looked to be hewn from solid granite while the F40 looked like it should say Tamiya on it somewhere from a build standpoint. Plus - how many thousand F40s vs under 300 959s? I know this is F-chat, but if I had the choice between the 2 (likely a Canepa modified 959 so I could actually drive the darn thing) - it would be the P-car in my garage.
Wait a couple more years to import it, even if you buy it today. In a little while longer, it will be 25 years old, and able to have further exceptions to importation, and EPA cert. A fantastic mechanical wonder. "drives like a 964" is a farce...
I think you missed his point. The 959 looks VERY similar to a regular 911, I think he meant that. While the F40 looks MUCH, MUCH meaner and race car like. The F40 may have higher build numbers, but it is worth much more. Not to mention that it is a better performing car, that is much more raw. But, with that being said, I'd still take a 959! I'd just rather a F40....
I agree w/ the post that followed this original about an F40 vs. 959...while neither of them really float my boat I think the 959 looks WAY better than an F40 and I too have seen them both up close and in person. F40 is really a race car that you can put a plate on and it is totally raw...don't need that in a street car thank you very much, but the 959's are fully street cars that were technologically ahead of their time by a decade or more. As for the "When the 959 came state side it lost a lot of power..." well, it NEVER came state side (not by Porsche). A few were imported early on (I know the guys that DOTed and EPAed the first one) and yea, it probably did loose some power, but the Canepa guys in CA have taken out all the stock stuff and put in a full MOTEC system and they actually make considerably more power (at least that is what THEY say, the magazine that tested them didn't feel it) than stock... YMMV, James Austin, TX
Just a few pics of a 959 that was on a 1,500 mile rallie I was on in the Big Bend National Park area of West Texas. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The 959 is my favorite car of all time (on paper). I've never driven one though. They're definitely collectible, as there were few made and they aren't going to be making any more. Investment-wise, it's hard to say. They'll probably drop slightly in value here in the states, as they are now more available here thanks to Canepa.
??????????? 997 turbo surpasses it technologically in about every possible way...that's 2008.....when the 959 came out it was lightyears ahead......i believe ferrari was still trying to build a car that lasts longer than a swatch and lambo was building tractors......
959 was a revolutionary no holds barred technological marvel. Way, way more of a milestone car than ANY Ferrari. Sorry. That said I'd rather have an F-40
Dude, get a clue. The 959 lost EVERY comparsion to the F40 on EVERY track. Stop being a fanboy. And who the hell cares about an off road race?
